Taylor was bleeding inside from the body shots, he & Chavez left a part of themselves in the ring that night, moreso Taylor, Chavez proper ruined him.
Guys, MT his JCC a lot more than the other way around in that fight. Why do you think MT was so much more damaged after the fight?
Incredible fight. The fact that it is still talked about 20 years later proves that it was a defining moment of the sport. I was so pissed when the fight was stopped, but with perspective, age, and wisdom have come to realize it was the right call.
Because JCC was landing bombs at every opportunity. MT should have sticked to outboxing or even running away in the last few rounds. The warrior like mentality lost him the fight. Very few win a blow out with JCC.
After the fight , Chavez had a scratch on his nose while Meldricks injuries were more like those that would be sustained in a horrific automobile accident. Throughout the fight Taylor was swallowing blood from a nasty slice inside the mouth. Chavez pounded Taylors midsection like a drum, Lou Duva said that Taylor urinated pure blood afterwards. Steele stopped the fight while the ten second ring post light was on, but even though there was only two seconds left , Steele had no way of knowing for sure, and Taylor could have been killed in 10 seconds. Steele could see Taylor was out on his feet, two seconds or two minutes.
It was 6 seconds....... Count off 6 seconds........thats a long time for someone who was in Taylor's condition.
Taylor had a 4 day stay in the hospital. His face looked grotesque, but his internal injuries were much more severe. The doctors at the Hospital said that Taylor's condition was the worst they had seen sustained on a fighter who arrived at their hospital concious. Having noted this, HBO had Taylor on the cards nearly pitching a shutout, Ray Leonard who was on that team did'nt give Chavez a ****ing round!atsch The call of that fight will forever taint HBO as the sham artist they were that night, and would become still to this day! Alot of people dont know this but HBO headquarters recieved alot of mail depicting their disgust of the way they called that fight with blinders on....... So heavy was the mail pouring in, that Jim Lampley took a copy of the broadcast home with him and watched for himself. Lampley weeks after admitted that though he still thought Taylor was ahead on the cards, they skewed the fight one way toward Taylor and neglected to see and point out the damage and work that was being done by Chavez. I think its the only time that Lampley has ever admitted that he and his crew called a bias fight.
