I just read this months Boxing Monthly or is it last months. Anyway one of the articles regarding PPV there was some excellent points. PPV should be PPV because they are the best fights out there and the whole card is worth an additional £15 on top of your normal subscription. Not Haye + any opposition = PPV or Khan or any Brit + any opposition = PPV We are all having to cut back a little at the moment and I think SKY should show some decency in doing the same instead of milking true boxings fans with crap PPV. I very much doubt I will be paying for anymore PPV events apart from Carl Froch and that wont be on SKY! What everyones thoughts on recent PPV events?
I wouldn't call myself a serious boxing fan, but I do keep slightly more than a casual eye on what is happening in the sport I did actually like the Mag 7 back in October (??), other than that though, I have only purchased a couple of Hatton fights post Mayweather and Haye winning his HW title, In general though, I do feel shortchanged by UK PPV's, not for the actual content, but for the fact they continue to have commercial breaks in (don't think they do State side?).
Yeah I got a copy of boxing monthly they made some good points especially where they were saying that the whole Amir Khan = £15 thing needs to stop/ Star fighter + anyone = ppv and that sky should be investing in boxing's future audience not abusing it's present fanbase.
Yeh read it myself, started subscribing to BM at the start of the year actually. Very good points about how SKY have PPV dates penciled in even before opponents are announced for Khan. Imagine if he would have fought Zudah or someone like that. Why don't they have the World Championship series a la HBO? I remember seeing Pavlik vs Sergio on that, you can bet if Pavlik was English that would have been PPV over here.
UFC PPVS are $50 in the US to add a bit more perspective however i do agree if your paying you want either an amazing fight or a heavily stacked undercard
But as I understand it they are are not already paying £20 - £80 already which you have to be paying to Sky to have the option of paying for the PPV. You have to pay at least £35 as well to get a sky PPV its just that you get a load of other crap with it.
No you're wrong. PPV is available on cable systems. You have to pay for cable in the US. How much depends on your package. And you can get sky for way under £35 a month...without looking that hard I could see an advert for a £20 per month variety pack.
Ok that may be true. I wasn't saying that Sky cost £35 though I was saying that to get a PPV you would have to be paying £20 for Sky plus your £15 PPV fee.
Although I'm guessing although they pay for cable then on top of that pay for PPV they are not paying a subscription to HBO for TV and sports etc and then paying HBO a one off PPV fee on top of the monthly subscription they pay to them?
When u read the articles on PPV numbers in the states they always state the Home Satellite buys and Home Cable buys. Don't know what to take from that but it might be relevant to this thread. The fact that the UFC PPV's cost 50 dollars a month and the minimum they put on is 12 a year is one of the reasons I think their numbers are fishy. I mean thats an outlay of 600 dollars a year if u want all of them. I do know their demographic has a larger sustainable incomes than your average Boxing fan in the states but still...
UFC doesn't put out numbers. All ppv numbers are estimates compiled from independent sources within the cable industry (i.e. Dave Meltzer). The UFC did do a survey which found that the average per buy audience for their event is between 8 and 12. So yes 50dollars a month is expensive but once you divided between a roomful of guys it becomes manageable.
Er they're doing exactly that. They pay for the cable system They then may have to pay for ESPN (depending on the system they have) They then must pay for HBO and/or Showtime if they want to watch any decent boxing They then must pay for ppv for the biggest matches. The biggest provider of PPV is HBO but Showtime has stepped back into the game with Pacquiao-Mosely
The problem with PPV's here and in the states is the quality of what classes a PPV why should every khan fight now be a PPV? Personally I think sky are going to overkill the PPV Market it should be reserved for only top fights with top fighters in just good bouts I.e mcloskey a SNF special headline.
