This I agree with. I can see Jeffries taking a match against Marvin Hart, post-Hart/Johnson, if the big fights were stiill happening in New York.

There was no big money to be had ,defending against the likes of Jack Munroe.
Do you think a match with Johnson in 1904 would have made money?

He was the Coloured heavayweight Champion.and had beaten,
    McVey x3
    Childs x2
    Russell
    Martin x2
    Ferguson x3
    Butler
    Gardner
    Kennedy
    Klondike
Name ONE fighter at the end of 1904 among the challengers of the heavyweight division, who had a better record.

Now tell me Jeffries could not have made big money fighting Johnson.

Then , ask yourself why the fight did not take place?

There was hope for a little money in the Monroe fight due to all the publicity around rumors Munroe had decked Jeffries in an exhibition, and also Monroe had accomplished a little bit in the meantime (though he wasn't a particularly strong contender); but the fight turned out a bit disappointing, financially.

Hard to say about a 1904 or 1905 Jeffries/Johnson fight, whether it would have made good money. It probably would have made the best money of any possible defense, because Johnson was seen as potentially the most challenging guy for Jeffries, and maybe also do to the interest in the racial angle. I don't really know whether or not it would have made good money; it would have a few years prior, but a lot of money went out of the game with the Horton law. Regardless, Jeffries wasn't going to give a black a shot at the heavyweight title.

Hypothetical: Boucher, do you think, with a prospect of good money vs an extremely beatable black fighter, Jeffries would have made a defense?

No Jeffries was comfortably fixed ,until his stupid brother ran his saloon business into the ground and his own gambling debts mounted up.

There are tangible grounds for stating that Tommmy Burns was the first REAL heavyweight Champion if only for 14rds, because, he at least, finally faced his best challenger ,who just happened to be black.
