Myung-Woo Yuh Appreciation Thread

I'm pretty sure Addie already did this exact same thread. Same title and all. Pretty lengthy discussions as well.

Top 5 Lt. Flyweight, a tier below the likes of Chang, Zapata, and Gushiken. On a par with the likes of Gonzalez and Carbajal, perhaps slightly above guys like Estaba, Torres, etc.

 

Not my number one and hard to say in a sense of greatness at the weight, but for me he's clearly one of the best to do it at that weight. He reminds me in a sense of Chavez in that he has that immovable object aura about him and he puts the short crosses and body hooks together really well, in a kind of thudding motion. Not the best boxer technically but you better believe it would be somewhat of a nightmare fighting him. He was more persisitent than relentless, and he was a hard ******* with accuracy. Not as good a defense as Chavez though.

Perhaps the most complete Light Flyweight I've personally watched in great detail. Great work rate, seemingly never-ending stamina, and never off his feet as a professional from what I know. Underrated combination puncher, and liked to break his opponents down with a consistent body attack. His wins were almost always hard fought as a result of him possessing very limited punching power, and one could find fault in his level of opposition. One of my all time favorites. I only rank Chang, Zapata, and Carbajal above Yuh at Light Flyweight.

Yeah, I'm a big fan. I should do a new highlight, including his fights with Oh Kon Son and Gamez II. Sublime performances.

 

I have a dvd of him somewhere which i haven't watched for donkeys, can't even remember what footage i have now, i'll try and find it at the weekend and give it a good viewing and report back. His lead shots with both the left and right hand between 1:30 and 1:50 of that vid are the ****. When that's happening to you you know you're in over your head.

 

:good My eyes lit up when I saw a thread dedicated to Yuh, don't be silly. I also felt compelled to make a thread about the man immediately after seeing footage of him. It was his fight with Tokushima that served as my introduction, and I was very impressed with his body work and combination's. I think he scored around 4-5 knockdowns in that fight alone, and it was ultimately his left hook to the body which signaled the beginning of the end.

Indeed. It should be said that the opposition wasn't really up to much in most instances in those highlights, but Yuh had impeccable timing with his right hand counters.

 

I like that you have referred to them as counters. Some people need to understand that 'countering' doesn't only encompass what someone like James Toney or Willie Pep does, making you miss by a hundred miles and then hitting you. Sometimes this is rightly called countering, what Yuh is doing here, and what Archie Moore would do of course, walking guys onto shots, opening them up with a feint and capitalising, I love that ****.

 

An excellent all-rounder who was a lot more consistent than some of his more fancied superiors who phoned in some performances during their primes.

 

I thought Yuh was extremely fundamentally sound, teeto. Where do you think he was lacking in that regard?

 

Just re-read my post after watching some of him on youtube, my comment was a bit rash and harsh. I do think his defence wasn't the best though, at times it looks sound when the right covers the chin and he catches stuff on the elbows, but then he'll just be teed off on with a one-two, and when he opens up he's just willing to take punches to land them. His jab is fine though, and his accuracy is atg.
