seemed like his stamina wasn't a problem against tarver or pavlik or even very recently against pascal. sounds like he set up a game plan (set a pace your opponent can't live with) & executed it. that's what great boxers do. set up a gameplan...then execute it. & you think this is a criticism of calzaghe or praise of hopkins? that b-hop got out-thought as well as out-fought? atsch

Calzaghe did pretty well considering he landed air and gloves pretty much all night.
Joe did alright considering he lost the fight.

 

Fail. He was clearly prime when he produced two of the most devastating performances of his career against Vargas at 154 and Joppy at 160.

I agree that Calzaghe's success wasn't just based upon his astromonical workrate. Because Hopkins has shown in numerous performances that he can negate that aspect of a fighters arsenal by using slick and clever movement. Calzaghe has the speed of hand and foot and overall agility to cut the ring off against Hopkins something many fighters like Tito and Pavlik failed to do.

I wouldn't say Calzaghe fought Hopkins fight to suggest he did is ludicrous, they were very different fighters at that stage in their respective careers. If Calzaghe had outboxed him rather than simply overwhelm him with constant pressure then you could say that but Calzaghe would never win a pure boxing match with the crafty executioner.

Also to say Hopkins was never a volume puncher shows a lack of knowledge. Prime Hopkins set a ferocious workrate himself. My favourite fight of Hopkins was his performance against another volume puncher Glencoffe Johnson. I have watched the fight several times and in the least active round of that fight Hopkins threw at least 60 punches, there were many rounds where he threw 70-90 punches and a few where he threw more than 100 punches per round. Prime Hopkins would have been able to match Calzaghes workrate which is why I would pick Hopkins to win a close but clear fight in their primes.
