order the divisions in terms of the greats that they've produced. take into account both the number of greats, and the greatness of the greats.

off the top of my head, i'd say:

    1. lightweight
    2. welterweight
    3. middleweight
    4. featherweight
    5. heavyweight
    6. light heavyweight
    7. bantamweight
    8. flyweight

not much thought has gone into that, 5-7 certainly requires some more.

    1. Welterweight
    2. Lightweight
    3. Middleweight
    4. Featherweight
    5. Lt. Heavyweight
    6. Bantamweight
    7. Flyweight
    8. Heavyweight

The first 3 are pretty much interchangeable for my money. 5-7 are pretty tough to order as well in terms of depth, so I seperated them by quality at the very highest level. Heavyweight takes a back seat to all as far as depth is concerned, although the upper echelon stacks up well enough against the latter half of the list.

    1. Lightweight - Leonard, Gans, Duran, Armstrong, Ross, Canzoneri... How many more pound-for-pound legends do you want? Williams, Ortiz, Arguello, Chavez, Whitaker... So many. Ambers, McFarland... Montgomery, Jack, Buchanan, Laguna, Blackburn, Nelson, Petrolle, Brown, Mosley, McAuliffe, Tendler, Lavigne, Welsh, Angott, De Jesus, Mandell. There are many more.

    2. Light heavyweight (take a close look)
    3. Welterweight
    4. Middleweight

    5. Heavyweight
    6. Featherweight
    7. Bantamweight

    8. Flyweight

At least we're all in agreement that Featherweight is indeed the 4th greatest weight class. No room for argument there.:good

Edit: Way to blow it, Manassa.

****. Heavyweights draw the short straw in a lot of these arguments. Granted, heavyweights in general seem to be lesser fighters than those in lighter divisions, but wouldn't you struggle with an extra thirty, sixty or ninety pounds on your frame? 'pound-for-pound' works in favour of heavyweights sometimes, in that it's harder to be agile and quick when that heavy, therefore we should cut more slack.

Lightweight, Welterweight then Middleweight and after that I dunno.

Flyweight v Heavyweight is an interesting one.

interesting lists guys, glad i asked the question! seems to be a vague consensus for the top four... with a fair few opting for flyweight as the weakest division.

seems like 5-7 is the least predictable part of everyone's lists...

heavyweight boxing is almost a different sport if you think about it. a lot of heavyweights are of similar height to those at middleweight and light heavyweight, yet their weights are disproportionately heavier.

Flyweight is far deeper than Heavyweight, whereas Heavyweight is stronger at the top. Depends on what you prefer.

    Light heavyweight?

Think... Charles, Moore, Langford, Greb and Fitzsimmons represent the division quite well in the pound-for-pound lists, without mentioning Tunney, Loughran, Spinks, Jones, Foster, Conn, J.H. Lewis, Gibbons, Rosenbloom, Johnson, Dillon, Pastrano, Maxim, Bivins, O'Brien and others.

    That's how I see it.

I see 14 great HW's and there are fewer than 10 genuinely great fighters that were flyweights, but you'd have guys like Arbachakov, Chitalada and Espadas in the top 15-30 spots who compare favourably to the guys doing those type of numbers at HW.
