Apparently there's a limit to what Alvarez can weigh on fight-night....

The fight weight was agreed and the fight ready to go the WBC decided to throw in a vacant title last minute. Their original contract stands and 150lbs is in the super welter class

as a matter if fact the WBC seemed to agree to 150 as well because this fight was originally for alvarez WBC silver belt, the best looking title out there albeit without real value

Regardless, the bout is happening at a catchweight, the title is on the line in a catchweight bout...the 2nd time in a row for this particular belt.

150lbs is within the Light-Middle division, but the weight class allows both boxers a limit of 154lbs...weight classes are there for a reason. It's already significantly easier to win World Titles with the amount of weight classes and extra belts...catchweight World Title bouts makes it that little bit easier.

I don't mind catchweights that get two boxers from different divisions fighting each other...but there should be no title on the line in these bouts. The organisations take most of the blame.

It will get to the point were you don't actually have to be World Class to win a World Title anymore.

The catchweight is an agreement independent of the world title. If Canelo wants, he can come it at 154 and the title will still be on the line, but he will make less money.

This fight is a joke anyway neither guy deserves to be near a title fight and Hatton is not even British level. He sucks. Does it really even matter? Hatton is getting that fragile British Glass Jaw shattered all over the ring just like his brother did.

Was this in the original contract, or negotiated when Ricky Hatton threatened to pull his brother out?

IN the first instance, what the hell was Alvarez and Golden Boy doing by agreeing to this? They are the ones who picked Hatton, drew up the contracts and were in control over negotiations, there was no need for it.

I think it's more likely it came about after Alvarez failed to make the contracted weight. The embarrassment of Hatton walking would've had Golden Boy willing to accept anything to ensure the fight goes ahead.

In any case, it's good cos the fight might still get called off, which means Vargas keeps his deserved record and Alvarez will then have to fight a deserving opponent for the belt. For the fight itself, it's a bit of an equaliser, and will ensure Alvarez the naturally bigger, more powerful man will not outweigh the smaller Hatton by too much. Greatly skilled guys like Pac and Mayweather can get away with giving away 10-15lbs to opponents, Hatton is not very skilled and could get seriously hurt.

I don't know why people are complaining about this. Hatton is the one with the most risk of getting hurt in this fight and Alvarez has had everything stacked in his favor from the get go.

Agreed. This catch weight for championship fights needs to stop.

there should a limit to his weight on fight night, the guy has a massive size advantage and every conceivable advantage going into this bout. He's being spoon fed his way to a joke of a belt. Hatton shoulda walked once he weighed over the catchweight, Hattons' a bum and would lose anyways but the fact is team Hatton wouldn't have siged in the first place if the fightnight limit wasn;t imposed.

Alvarez can come in weighting 180 and hrs before the fight theres no way this fight doesnt happen.. too many powers involved too much money.. they will do something give hatton an extra 200k but the fight will go on.. and alvarez will feel he is invincible when the truth is he's too protected
