What fights were heartbreaking for you to watch? Was it was your favorite fighter being upset in a tune up? Was it watching a fighter sticking around too long and being demolished by someone he would have dominated in his prime? Maybe it was seeing someone get hurt badly after the fight should have been stopped but wasn't? For me, it was: Mike Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis - Mike was so amazing at his peak, but had fallen so far. Long after he should have hung em up he was still fighting because he needed the money for the IRS. Then, to loose to Lennox and listen to everyone talk about it like it was a huge victory... I imagine that is how the Joe Louis fans felt watching him fight Ezzard Charles and Rocky Marciano. Roy Jones vs. Joe Calzaghe - Roy, one of the most dominant forces in the ring since Ali, should have long retired but hung around. He fought Calzaghe, a guy who Roy would have demolished in his prime, and was taken apart. Joe gave Roy a giant dose of his own medicine, which I didn't mind seeing. What bothered me was watching a ring legend lose so badly simply because he didn't know when to hang em up. Arturo Gatti vs. Floyd Mayweather - Nobody had more heart that Gatti. He didn't have amazing technique, but he was a great fighter who gave 200% every time he fought. Watching him be embarrassed by Floyd in a giant mismatch of styles was hard to watch. I felt Gatti had given so much to boxing and Floyd (and his fan base) had no respect for, and could care less about that. Gatti was a classy guy and Floyd shows us constantly that money can't buy class.
Naz-Barrera. Not as heartbreaking as it could have been, because a Naz-loss towards the latter stages of his career was foreseeable. His love for the sport was dying, and Barrera just gave him that final push to make him turning his back for good. Roy Jones-Tarver II. In his day, Roy was a demi-god of some sort. So to watch him be sent crashing to floor, was a shock. It was made equally worse with Tarver’s words of “Got any excuses tonight, Roy?” still ringing in my ear. Cotto-Margarito. The fan-friendly and machine-like Cotto that we all knew and loved, was left behind in the ring that night, never to be seen again. Margarito did irreparable damage to him.
hattons looses to floyd (after all the trash talking) and the Pac one as well were painfull to watch.
Ali vs holmes- I damn near cried watching ali get beat like that. Tyson vs lewis- Huge tyson fan and it was sad to see him go out like that. Jones vs tarver- Fav fighter growing up and stopped watching boxing for a long time when he got ko.
to be honest watching Frazier get beat in manila bothered me more saying that i never watched the holmes/ali fight again until last year and i wont be watching it again
