Frazier had a great chin. Besides George, the other fights mentioned were early in career. Frazier ended up knocking out Bruce in three. That was Joe's second pro fight. I also agree that not many would have got up after that second knockdown in Foreman-Frazier 1.
Exactly.I don't know why people question Frazier's chin.If you look through Frazier's resume,he fought some of the greatest punchers who ever lived.Ali,Quarry,Ellis,Mathis,Bugner,Daniels,Chuvalo - these guys could knock down buildings with a single punch. I'd personally argue that his punch resistance was superior to that of Marvin Hagler.I mean,when did Hagler prove he could get up six times after hitting the canvas inside of two rounds? That's right,he never did. Yes,that's true.If you're fighter simply doesn't want to continue,then as a trainer,it is your duty to stop the fight.
Frazier never beat Bonavena . In fact he deserved an L against him in their first fight. A man doesn't win a fight by getting floored 0:2 and never even seriously hurting his opponent . Also Bonavena's chin was not that great , as was proven by Ali and even by Zora Folley and Jimmy Ellis. Bonavena also lost (on paper , but still failed to stop his faded opponent) to a 37 years old Floyd Patterson. So one must either consider Paterson as shot and Bonavena as far from great , or consider Paterson so great that even at 37 he managed to beat such a good (?) fighter. And yes , I do consider Bonavena as a worthy meaningful win for everyone who really beat him (but P4P , Ali's win over him is just the obvious waiting to happen , Ali was in another weight class than Bonavena who could have made the 190 mark had it been such a limit in his days) What I colored in red are really nuthugging statements far from the truth. Bonavena's power's also overrated. Frazier should be remembered as the greater fighter though. The #3 in a strong , yet overrated and not the strongest era. A menacing chubby cruiserweight fighting heavyweights , but sometimes other cruiserweights and sometimes lightheavyweights who did very good against most of them. Frazier was better than Ali against mutual opponents except Foreman and Bonavena , but then Ali had the severe heat and the criminally intentionally loosened ropes by his side in Zaire .

Calm down. I thought Frazier clearly beat Bonavena in the first fight despite suffering from a kd. I haven't seen the second fight so I don't have much judgement despite looking at a highlight. I said Bonavena had "good" power not "great" and yes Ali stopped him but he had good power himself and was tagging him cleanly. Floyd fought quite well against Bonavena and I think that was more of Floyd being great rather than Bonavena being bad. Loose ropes or not, Ali toke some clean shots and overcame Foreman while countering him well. Ali's smarts & will won him the fight, not the ropes. They did help but they weren't the only factor and Ali still toke some shots but eventually ko'd George.
'Smokin Joe' was never counted out,,,,,,,,,so that must count for something. But Muhammad Ali did see something in his defense, as early as mid-1970 he thought Joe would have problems with George Foreman and also,,,,,,,Floyd Patterson..
i used to like him a lot. however that has faded over the years, i've lost some respect i once had for him. he was a great boxer, but i hate it when he comes across as bitter in some interviews. i think he's so pissed off because he always feels he's in the shadow of ali. however i don't think he should feel that way at all. as a boxer he stands out on his own merits whether theres an ali or not.
Ali and Frazier are 2 of my favorites ever,but the manner in which Muhammed treated Joe was reprehensible.And that's the reason Joe is still angry at Ali.
