There hasn't been a "real" linear champion for a long, long time. The lineage has been fabricated far too many times now because multiple champions retired while holding the championship and never passed the real title on. You can argue that if the championship becomes vacant, the winner of the bout between #1 and 2 is the new linear champ, but that also became very fuzzy when the championship split up in multiple belts and then boxers started to refuse fighting eachother. Just take the Lewis/Bowe thing for example. And if a guy drops the championship, fights on for a couple of years and eventually loses to some smuck is that smuck suddenly the linear champ? It's all arbitrary, and it has been for a long time. Wlad is the Champ, Vitali is the #1 contender and beltholder and Haye the #2 contender and beltholder.
All true. The point is, the WBA belt (being the linear belt at least) is in the hands of Haye. Some people wont even recognise him as a champion though. Personnally I think that is a shitty standpoint. If champions of the last few years chose to disregard the lineal belt and chase other "new" titles, it doesnt mean Haye is just a contender. There are three man belts and three champions. Its ****, but true.
Um...based on you post I don't think it was. When you used the term lineal like this, it makes it just as meaningless as the belt.
The linear championship is made out of "the man who beat the man, who beat the man". So that should make Wlad the linear champion right now with your way of looking at it, because Wlad beat Chagaev who never lost the belt in the ring, but on the moment he signed the fight with Wald. But that also has been arbitrary at best, because I never concidered Chageav beïng the linear champion. The "official" line even states Shannon Briggs held the championship for a while when he "beat" Big George and afterwards lost to LL. It stopped again when Lewis retired, then you might say Vitali won the vacant belt and is linear champ right now. But it's all bull right now anyway.
