This was from a few days ago... NRL 'curse' doesn't bother Benji Marshall David Beniuk March 2, 2011 Ads by Google Free Practice Account www.GFT.com.au Want to learn more about cfds? We can help. Learn More AAP Benji Marshall is fully aware of the "curse" that comes with being the face of the NRL but is adamant he'll stay the player every kid wants to be. In the week Dally M medallist Todd Carney's involvement in the NRL's season launch was scaled back, New Zealand Test captain Marshall conceded being rugby league's pin-up boy had a checkered history. Manly's Brett Stewart caused the game's flagship This content is protected This content is protected commercial to be re-edited when he was banned after an alcohol-fuelled evening and charged with sexual assault ahead of the 2009 season. But off-field dramas are something the clean-cut Marshall, who was chosen to launch the 2011 season in the NRL's heartland of western Sydney on Wednesday, is determined to avoid. "After the past couple of years it was sort of a curse they reckon," he told reporters at the Casula Powerhouse. "It's not going to change what I do away from This content is protected This content is protected or what I do in the game. "I want to be the player that kids want to be when they grow up. "I've had a pretty This content is protected This content is protected image and I want to keep it that way. "I'm pretty wary of where I am and what I do to make sure I keep the same image because I know image goes a long way in life and at the end of my This content is protected This content is protected I want to still have that image." Instead of playing a part at the launch, Carney was preparing to meet NRL boss David Gallop about his future. "It was a relatively minor adjustment to what we were doing but we certainly think it was the right decision for him and for everyone else," Gallop said. Marshall said he felt for the Sydney Roosters star. "It's a tough call because Todd's a young guy and I'm a young guy and you want to hang out with guys your age and do what they're doing, but we're key figures in this game and role models of the game," Marshall said. "It's hard to take I know and, to tell you the truth, we hate the fact that we have to change the way we are." The launch continued the NRL's assault on the AFL's expansion into western Sydney, the pointed message there in rock supergroup Bon Jovi's song This Is Our This content is protected This content is protected blaring from the league's new television commercial. Marshall was also singing in tune, firing back at the Giants' signing of ex-NRL star Israel Folau. "It's good to see the NRL hitting back and fighting back," the Wests Tigers' five-eighth said. "There's so many more Polynesians playing rugby league than there is one playing AFL, so you tell me who the Polynesians are going to This content is protected This content is protected ." The league will be hoping for a season devoid of a salary cap scandal similar to the one that rubbed Melbourne out of the This content is protected This content is protected premiership. Marshall had earlier delivered a speech he wrote himself which was strong on passion and the players' concerns for the recent disasters in Christchurch, Queensland and Victoria. He revealed he had been the star of the debating team at Keebra Park High School in Southport. "When I was at high school I was probably the best at speeches that I knew," he said.
Gallop, that pencil-necked chinless wonder fined Stewart $100K and only fined Carney $10k. What a ****ing *****.
"The NRL incensed the Sea Eagles on Monday by announcing they would await the outcome of Benji Marshall's court case before considering any sanction after he was charged with assault following a weekend incident." "The club claims Stewart's treatment in 2009 was "grossly unfair" when he was suspended for four matches and the club fined $100,000 following their boozy season launch in 2009." "Manly believes the NRL acted too quickly in punishing Stewart, claiming there was no evidence the representative full-back was heavily intoxicated at the time the NRL said he breached their code of conduct. However, the NRL hit back, claiming Manly's own report on the incident indicated Stewart was asked to leave the licensed premises where the Sea Eagles held their launch due to intoxication." Can anyone tell me exactly what it was that Stewart did whilst intoxicated at the season launch that brought the game into disrepute, or is Gallop just clutching at straws? :hey ""We believe communication and fairness is the key and it is not a sign of weakness by the NRL to admit they might have been wrong."" ""The club doesn't take any issue with the recent decision of the NRL in the case of Benji Marshall. "Allowing the legal process to take its course, without intervention, is the correct decision to take."" Right on Manly, just a shame that Gallop can't admit he ****ed up and is now trying to use the 'he was intoxicated' excuse for over-reacting and penalising Stewart. ""It remains disappointing that this is being revisited at a time when Brett should be allowed to move on with everyone's support," Gallop said in a statement." Yeah, sure you ****ing four-eyed beaker-headed zitfaced goofy-looking chinless wonder ****. Sweep it under the carpet GayPole, never admit to a mistake, you'll make a good politician one day you simpering, snivelling, quivering lump of human waste. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/03/08/3158154.htm?site=sport§ion=rugbyleague
I feel all of them are acting like spoilt Brats IMO. Benji Carney and other Players getting paid to play the sport they love only to bring it to its knees. And i know I have been a big believer in they should get paid more but playing the sport you love for say $180 k a Year and some get more than that and then always ****ing up. Sometimes these players need a reality check. And I agree they still need to have a Life aswell but the way Benji is whinging at the moment im starting to think No Wonder these ****ers dont get the same pay as AFL Players.
Ill let you in on a little secret, a huge proportion of them dont love it past a certain point and only stay in the game for the money and lack of realistic options.
I was about to go on a rant until I read this, took the words outta my mouth but in a more exotic manner.
It is a joke for sure, and some may call it paranoia or me being anti-Roosters, but Nick Politis is the reason why the Roosters are always getting the rub of the green with these sorts of things.
No need to worry Pecks Carney is out for round 1 so no need to get all angry. Pretty sure Benji isnt with the Roosters....so whats your excuse for him getting off easy? as you said your "anti Rooster" so your opinion means nothing :yep
For evidence of GayPole's inconsistency in dealing with such matters, go back to Watmough's drunken behaviour at the very same Sea Eagles season launch - Choc slapped one of the team's sponsors and he too was asked to leave the premises - the club fined him and he played in round 1. Stewart didn't slap a sponsor and left when asked to vacate the premises and caught a cab home - the NRL fined Manly $100k and suspended Stewart for 4 games. Explain that, GayPole you **** :deal
Gallop is a turd... i have always said Gus Gould should be in charge. Heaps hate him but im a big fan and have alot of respect for the guy. Even a coach like Benett or Sheens would do well.
