For whatever it's worth, he's got a bigger following than Pac and Floyd combined at that age. Canelo's has a lot to live up to!
Good for Mexican boxing fans and Mexico boxing in general. Now they have a new fresh popular face to root for in lieu of the aging warriors in Morales, JMM, Barrera, etc. Now Canelo should start to cement his popularity and face some real tough opposition.
Definetly the guy hasn´t done much but I don´t know why he is much popular than Morales and Barrera in the country even in their prime (As far as I remember). The two main televisions (Televisa and TV Azteca) started to put a lot of money in boxing since about 2 years ago, so Televisa, who is the biggest of both, sponsors Canelo and they really advertise him a lot and very often. I believe that is the main reason. I don´t remember people here in México going that crazy for a boxer since Chavez Sr. The thing is that even people who don´t care abut box here in México know him. My favorite boxer is Juan Manuel Marquez and I can tell you Canelo would be seen by much more people here than Marquez.... Also the fight was televised on a Saturday night in Televisa for free, so I can imagine a lot of people watched the fight.
i have a friend in mexico city and i swear to god he doesn't know **** all about boxing he barely knows JCC Sr. and he doesn't know Barrera, Morales, and those guys. When I talk to him about boxing I'm like "**** the mexicans on ESB would be ashamed of this guy"
That's ****ing incredible if true. But for those saying it's about "looks" or whatever - why would the average Mexican choose to support a guy who looks nothing like him instead of (better) fighters that do?
There's a lot of factors involved here; looks, charisma, youth, exciting style and KOs. Let's not forget that marketing aspect, but Canelo has earned his popularity. He has done his part by fighting all over his country creating a huge fans base and as long as the wins and KO's continue so will the Canelo Express.
Everyone keeps mentioning his charisma. What charisma? He just kind of stands there and talks when asked questions.
