I knew Hopkins was gonna be ahead in the votes even before I voted because people on here cannot separate reality from their hate of a fighter. Mayweather >>>> Hopkins
I was going to post in this thread explaining why Hopkins resume was greater. But I oh look at the facts Mayweather actually has a greater legacy between the two. But there's a difference, Hopkins will be remembered as a true great who is in the top 5 MW fighters of all time who went up in weight in his 40s fighting and beating younger men. Mayweathers career will forever be criticised for not facing the quality of opposition he was supposed to fight
Okay, the way I interrupted Bonkers post, was to look at his light welter/welter years because most people overlook his earlier career. and yes, he's beaten 8 world champs but he's beaten them over 6 years. 8 fights in 6 years. The level of his opposition could of been so much greater than what it is. Yes i get that he retired and now he is on vacation. But one of those 8 is JMM who he fought at 147 - yes JMM called him out, but still he's a 135 fighter and even then Mayweather even came over the "limit." He's wins over Judah/Baldo I have no problem with. As Baldo was the champ and Judah he set up a fight with prior to his loss to Baldo. Wins over Mitchell, Gatti are hardly worth bragging about. C level fighters at their best. There was no reason to mention pacman other than the fact he's best wins over the same period of time put mayweather to shame. I'm more disappointed in Mayweather Jnr's latter career, because he could of beaten all those fighters but he never took the opportunity to do so. Hopkins is limited in the sense he has had to work very hard to stay on top of the game. He wasn't blessed with anything in particular but he's crafted a great career.
Floyd's a great fighter who has achieved a lot, and people are always attacking him just for the sake of attacking him, but he doesn't do himself any favours with some of the shite that he talks, and ultimately Bernard Hopkins has legendary status, does Floyd? I'm not so sure.
Two of the most boring fighters in the history of the sport. Resume and skills its close but i give the edge to Hopkins cause of his longevity.
I slagged off the Marquez fight as much as most but I did just throw out the the general statistics. I can pick bits and pieces out about the context of most fighters with regards to the names they've beaten, titles the've won, etc. You've already addressed that he was RETIRED and the scope of his career has very little to do with another ATG (Pac) who isn't in this discussion coming up behind him and doing a wealth more down the stretch of his own career. They're not great wins or amongst his best but when you're a championship level name, it does signify that you're "of a certain level" and I wouldn't call them C level fighters. B is more like it. And B ain't bad, brother. Gatti held a legit world title at the weight class May fought him in, ring worn as he was. Mitchell, in the year leading up to fighting Mayweather had held the IBF interim 140-belt, challenged but lost to Zoo in a deserved rematch and moved up to welter, only one fight before Floyd and grabbed the regional NABA belt there. Those aren't C-class fighters, although both were faded. They were absolute shutouts over well-regarded B-level championship proven names, imo. Manner of victory over good name opponents considering, I think it's quite noteworthy. Okay, I got ya. I'd absolutely agree that he wasn't physically blessed like Mayweather-for sure. But, usually when someone says "limited skills" they are talking about guys that can't think their way out of a gazebo. So, I normally don't think of ingenious-level ring IQ fighters as "limited skills" types, even if they're not athletically incredible specimens.
Seriously? Not when lookint at the actual fights. Hopkins knocked DLH out. Mayweather edged him. Castillo arguably beat PBF once while Hopkins dominated Tito. Tito was also unbeaten higher ranked and a big fav over Hopkins. None of this can be said about Castillo. Clearly for Hopkins. Taking everything into account Hopkins has the better resume. Mayweather´s is good and he could have a better one than B-Hop. Sadly he hasn´t.
