In no other sport there is such a blind and unfounded focus on being a buffed up goon either, many boxers spend more time in front of the mirror than bodybuilders. I'm guessing you won't be discussing the "deeper psychological issues" of that :)

Can a boxer benefit from being stronger and having more power? Yes or no?

    This I agree with.

Just like there are people who don't accept that you could get those same results with sports specific work, which isn't any less "scientific" (specificity, adaptability).

    Yes.

Can a boxer get stronger and gain power by other methods of resistance training than lifting weights? Yes or no.

Yes. You're trying to argue something I'm not even disputing.

I never mentioned bodybuilders, those guys have even deeper issues or read too many magazines!
Don't associate what I'm discussing with dedicated bodybuilders! not the object of the exercise at all.
Most low level bodybuilders are incredibly insecure and narcissistic individuals, but the top pros are just very dedicated individuals no different to anyone else at the very top of their sport.

    Most definitely!

Name a few that you would use.

I agree on all points, and never said they are the be all and end all, but they are the most efficient method of developing strength, that's all.

Just like I never claimed weights were bad but still got the "dark ages" speech. This happens on both sides of the argument.

If strength would be everything required for boxing, I'd trade in bag work for it because I would not need its other benefits ;)

You don't, no. But most boxers see weights as a bad thing. It comes up quite a bit and some of the responces show the kind of bull**** that's spread in boxing gyms due to lack of knowledge or pure ignorance.

It isn't all that's needed, the point I was making was there are more efficient ways of developing strength, nothing to do with the other benefits of bag work.

I know man, my point was that I'd personally rather take the less efficient method in that one aspect, and have the benefit of training the other aspects at the same time. But we're getting repetitive and we don't even disagree much, just on personal preference in choice of exercise.

I do love these threads btw, they liven up the board a little :yep

Oh definitely, I would too! If I had a choice, as a boxer, to do 2 days of bag work, or 1 day of bag work and 1 day of strength.. I'd take the bag work days, NO question. Definitely boring by now though :D

Yeah that's why I keep coming back to the thread really, and virus starts some good fights!

It shows the exact same ignorance that loads of boxers that do lift have, that strength is the most important aspect of physical fitness, which often leads to neglecting all the other aspects. There is ignorance on both sides.
