Totally agree... People remember him being decked by Mccall and Rahman but forget that, regardless of Lewis' preperation for latter and that the first punch was possibly "lucky", both would have KO'd most heavyweight champions in history IMHO. They forget that in fights like the Klitschko one and against Mercer, an often over-looked fight, he took some huge shots and simply walked through them.
It's close between Ruddock, Golota, Rahman II and Vitali. (he really had to gut that out and it's an underappreciated win, for him doing that). Of these, I'd probably go with Rahman II, followed by Ruddock, as it takes guts to get back in the ring with someone who KO'd you last time you meet. He not only did that, he clearly showed who the better fighter was. With Ruddock, many people expected him to win that fight, so that fact it wasn't even competitive..says a lot about Lewis' skills.
I actually think they are two of the lesser punchers he faces. Mercer, Tua, Morrison, Holyfield, Tyson, Bruno, Ruddock, Briggs, all genuinely BIG punchers. Mavrovic (spelling) would do really well today IMO. Lennox said that was his hardest fight.
Also, I genuinely think he could've continued in the McCall fight. Rahman, badly prepared and at altitude. Okay, he slipped up. But his resume paints how much of a quality fighter he was. I have him at no.3 on my ATG HW list.
Gotta be the Ruddock fight, Lewis was just beastly in there. I do love the Briggs fight as well, I know he took a few but I loved the way he demolished him. You've got ya pick of alot of Lewis fights to be fair, he has good depth in his record.
Briggs, Klitschko, Mercer, Holyfield all landed flush on him and he didnt go. Cant be judged on 2 poor performances (in the ring and the gym) I also dont like that Lennox was criticised for coasting a bit not having the killer instinct when Rahman II, Golota, Grant, Ruddock, Bruno, Briggs, Morrison etc decent level fighters were all taken care of before half way- apart from Bruno that went 7 call me a liar for 1 round fleaman ya tit! Most important and very good performance Holyfield II (ya know manning another ATG...) Golota was great as it came directly after effectively beating Bowe twice and the manner the win was achieved. Performance wise probably Ruddock or Morrison though Tommy didnt posess too much of a threat to Lewis he was very decent and Lennox looked very sharp that night. Its a great thread and not a straight forward answer as he did have many good wins
Ruddock probably. Nothing like a bit of revenge though, in which case Rahman II is also in with a shout.
He has a lot of depth indeed. Skillwise he's right up there, his jab is one of the greatest in HW history. Gaz, if you're here: Holmes or Lennox for jabs. Holmes a bit more snappy, Lennoxs great for establishing range (and not robotic like say, Wlads effective jab today) and also a bludgeoning tool. Come to think of it, Mercer is right up there. I do really rate a peak Mercer though, solid in terms of schooling, truly iron chin and a top ten Heavyweight puncher (IMO). He was in one of the greatest eras ever unfortunately.
I don't have him that high up but, as the years pass by and I re-evaluate his career, he is slowly creeping up... When he retired I had him around 15th but I can accept any arguement that places him around 10th now.
Bruno went seven rounds didn't it? That's another top fight. A young Lennox is shown that, for all his credentials, the more experienced man is utilising his jab to greater effect and piling it on. A heavy puncher was Bruno as well. Lennox showed genuine fighting instinct and the ability to pick his shots in that fight. He seemed to change the tide and end the fight in a split second, against a top operator.
ah, Larry Holmes... The man has got me into so many arguements over the years it is unbelievable... To me he is one of the best 3 heavyweights of all time but others seem to have a very low opinion of him still, after all these years... Greatest jab in history, IMHO.
No.3 but Fleaman he fought on colour TV, I thought that would get him a mark down in your books. Sorry couldn't resist :yep
