I agree, Ive only ever seen their 1st fight... their best fight according to 99% of people & that was a very good fight, nothing more, not `great` but just `very good`..... it was a case of Gatti outboxing Ward for the majority of the fight, then Ward makes it a bit of a tear up in the last few rds... rd 9 was the stuff of legends tho & if it wasnt for that particular rd then this fight, never mind this trilogy would never get mentioned in the same breath as EM-MAB, Ali-JF etc. JMO :good
Based off those performances man.. I'd give it to them.. you dont come across that stuff too often...
in terms of significance, skill level, importance and level of greatness and it all iving up to the moment Ali vs Frazier is the one, all else pales in comparison. another trilogy flying under the radar scope is Duran vs Esteban DeJesus
Can't pick between Ali-Frazier, Bowe-Holyfield, and Barrera-Morales. Ali-Frazier had 2 classics, I have both FOTC and Thrilla in my top 10, but the rematch was pretty crappy. Barrera-Morales had 1 classic in the first fight, the rubber match was very good, and the 2nd fight was okay. Nothing special, but a close competitive bout and certainly better than the second Ali-Frazier fight. All 3 bouts in Bowe-Holyfield were very good, but none quite at the level of Barrera-Morales 1, or Ali-Frazier 1 and 3. Also not evenly matched to the extent of Barrera-Morales. If not for the fourth fight, Vazquez-Marquez would be my #1 trilogy. Gatti-Ward was good, the first bout is a classic, but too one-sided as a trilogy. Gatti shut Ward out in the 2nd bout and won the final bout 8-2 despite a broken hand.
I thought the first bout was great, but the trilogy as a whole gets overrated. It was pretty one sided, Gatti won 22-25 of the 30 rounds in the trilogy. Gatti broke his hand in the 4th round (I think) of the third bout. Of the 6 rounds after that, Ward could only manage to win one of them, and that was after losing the first 2:55 of it. Gatti-Ward 3 was not more deserving of 2003 Fight of the Year than bouts like Toney-Jirov and Gomez- Arthur.
Barrera\Morales in my book. When two fighters hate each other so much that even AFTER they fought in the ring they still fighting outside of the ring.....classic. They hatred between these two is insane. Watching those fights and the look on their face. Tense man really ****ing tense.
BTW Gatti/Ward trilogy gets kind of boring. That fight is like watching two drunk rednecks going at it. Not really entertaining to me to be honest.
