Lopez was pretty good at nullifying the effects of punches to avoid getting tagged flush. He was certainly harder to hit than either of the Marquez brothers, and the proof of that is apparent in some of his earlier title defenses.
The Marquez brothers usually had superior offensive fighters to contend with, but neither of those two would be getting anywhere near a 9. I think to give Lopez a 9 in defensive capabilities and then 8 in combination's is questionable. That's all.
It wasn't just, 1 knockdown if u watch the fight . Cooper was winning on the scorecards . get the facts, correct .
A lot of his opponents tended to be dropped by one or two clean punches, so the opportunity to display superior combination punching wasn't as apparent in fights as his ability to defend against an opponent's attacks. That's the basis for my rationale, in terms of watching Lopez fight and rating him. Wouldn't argue too much if you switched the two around in terms of your own rating of Finito. But, even though though Lopez's opposition wasn't amazing, in general, most of the guys that he faces are throwing pretty decent punches that might well have connected against other fighters. They don't tend to land on Lopez, and that says something for his ability to defend against incoming, imo. Docking him a point for defense isn't out of the question, but it's still an underrated attribute of his, as far as I'm concerned.
"Underrated" isn't a word I associate with any facet of Ricardo Lopez's abilities. I'd probably give him a 6/7 in defensive capabilities, personally.
Well if there was one facet of Lopez's game that tends to get overlooked, it's his defense, imo. At least as good as Wilfredo Gomez's was at his best- and Bazooka typically gets rated as at least an 8 in this category.
