Right now, what is your 1-4 ranking of the top 4 supermiddleweights?

    - Ward has beaten Kessler, but doesn't have a strong resume outwith that, and is undefeated

    - Kessler has beaten Froch and lost to Ward convincingly, won his 3 before that vs C-class comp and before that lost a unification vs Calzaghe

    - Froch has lost to Kessler, but does have a strong resume outwith that, beating Abraham, Taylor & Pascal, and (very arguably) "beating" Dirrell

    - Bute hasn't fought any of them, he is undefeated but is now fighting C-class guys like Brinkley & Magee




    How do you place these four in an acceptable 1-4 order?! :nut

    Ward has to be number 1 IMO, he did beat number 1 SMW Kessler, and although wins over the likes of Bika, Green and Miranda aren't exactly stellar, Bute hasn't exactly been beating better.

    My rankings would probably be;

    Ward
    Bute
    Kessler
    Froch.

    Ward has ONE good win. just a single good win.
    Froch has beaten the Best opposition. Direll (who was a stylistic nightmare for him), Pascal (went on to win LH title), Abraham, Taylor.

    Playing Devil's Advocate:

    Froch lost to Kessler, and Ward dominated Kessler.

    Froch did not deserve the decision against Dirrell.



    Still Froch at number 1?

    (I think Froch has as good a shout as any of the others for the top spot, just interested in your response to those two points)

    In fact, I do not see the argument for ranking Bute ahead of Froch at all. Froch's level of competition absolutely shames Bute.

    for me, this is the toughest of all the weight classes...

    I'm more inclined to do it in tiers

    first tier-froch and ward

    second tier-kessler and bute

    I want to agree with that... but it's still tricky putting Froch in a separate tier from Kessler when Kessler beat him not long ago.

    Ward hasn't proven his ability against the depth of opposition that Froch has, which includes facing big punchers, fast punchers, aggressive and defensive, European, American and so on. Froch has a massive amount of diversity yet only one loss. That's more significant than fighting one elite fighter, who may have been perfect for Ward, and winning. When you consider the headbutts and the fact the fight ended because of them, whilst it's a good win it's not one without a few "Buts".

    The old boxing adage that 'styles make fights' is true but when you faced top class opposition and only lose one fight, which was close, that's proof of an elite fighter. Ward, whilst impressive, hasn't proven he is a great fighter yet.

    If all these guys retired tomorrow, Froch would be ranked the highest. Ward is impressive but he needs to prove it because legends aren't based on "what if's".

    As for the other two, they aren't really worth mentioning. I think it'd go Froch, Ward, Kessler and then Bute.
