What is Mayorga's Place In History?

If he'l be remembered it'l be the guy who fought all the top guys at 154/147 and lost most of his big fights.

 

A belt holder, a contender that achieved more then he was supposed to! A funny ****er that always put on a show... The guy who beat forrest twice!

 

He can still fight. How a bout a fight with berto or margarito

 

How is that a sad record?

 

A good showman, and a decent fighter. Mayorga isn't a garbage fighter, he can really bang, and on his day is dangerous. You got to admire the guy, he's been in some good fights, he's never in a boring fight.

 

Well, as an obscure Nicaraguan fighter with very limited fundamentals, he came to the world stage and brutally knocked out undefeated Americans, Andrew Lewis and Vernon Forrest to take their Welterweight titles. Forrest as we know was coming off 2 superb wins over unbeaten Shane Mosley, and therefore was massively favoured going into the bout with this, perceived by the majority to be, wild swinging, dangerous, but largely unskilled fighter. Mayorga shook boxing up by smashing Forrest to bits in 3 rounds. Forrest, who was never stopped again in his professional career, was perceived to have a good chin, and known to have terrific defense. This did not stop the raging El Matador from tearing his head off.

Perhaps even more shockingly, Mayorga outpointed Forrest, who elected to box, in the rematch. Winning most of the early rounds with his agression, and snatching enough of the late rounds to clearly win the fight. The wild-man had proved that he was not just a 1 trick pony. Although his career trailed off to some degree after this fight, including eventual losses to Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad, Mayorga remained a well known fighter, and was still relevant the boxing scene, even in his post prime state.

Some may remember him as the trash talker who had too much to say, the guy who couldn't cut it against the very best. But for me, he's a 2 weight world champ who took the 0 of arguably one of the most skilled fighters of his era - Vernon Forrest. A guy who, even when past his prime, gave Shane Mosley a hellacious fight (Mosley went on to annihilate Antonio Margarito), and kept his fight with Miguel Cotto competitive until injury forced a stoppage. A wild man. A man who would never dissapoint if excitement was being asked of him. He lit up boxing, and last night, he proved to me again what I already knew - Mayorga is a ****ing legend.

He may never get into the hall of fame, but I'll always remember him. For his great performances, for his antics, and for his honesty. War Mayorga!!!
