This I believe would be a interesting fight. Not sure who would win though. Ward is quite crafty almost resembles a young Bernard Hopkins with his in-fighting ability. On the outside I think Martinez Jab and combination punching would be effective. Ultimately I think Ward would pull it out. What does the Forum think?
Not even close. Ward will murder him. This is one fight I will bet the house on. And ward has no problems/fears fighting guys bigger than him. Sergio still thinks he is 147 - 154lbs apparently.
Ward will get inside on Martinez and rough him up. Also Ward will push Martinez' stamina to the limit. Martinez will have a very hard time landing clean. I pick Ward by decision.
Not in the slightest. Ward will counter punch the **** out of martinez's weak ass throws, where he leaves himself wide open. I really think Ward sticks to the outside in this one. Put it in this way, Ward mops the floor with the 168lb'ers. Why the **** would he have problems with someone smaller? Ward will probably think he will go to jail if this happens. And there is nothing more I would love than for Ward to go down to 160 and clean house after 168 is done.
Very Good points, actually this is starting to feel like a Failed thread on my part. I had to know what the forum felt though, being that Roy Jones and Jim Lampley suggested this last night.
I agree with you generally what you just wrote except the stamina part. Martinez grew up playing cardo based sports - soccer and cycling (and probably in high altitude). I don't think his stamina is an issue at all. His technique with a lot of wasted movement is probably a bigger concern. I say Ward in late TKO.
Ward is too book with and his fouling, phone booth brawling style is a problem for anyone...i personally dont like watching it at all
How about Martinez vs Arthur Abraham? AA isn't doing very well at 168. I think that would be WAY more exciting than Martinez - Ward.
what makes you think Ward can just drop 8 more pounds no problem? Have you ever boxed or wrestled? Clearly the guy cuts weight to make 168...cutting another 8 pounds will be good on his body...thats how you lose your reaction time by cutting and gaining weight all the time...if anything, Ward should move up to light heavy and finally retire Hopkins
I think Martinez showed stamina issues against Williams 1 and Pavlik. Also, although i don't like to judge that way, he looked like he was a little gassed between rounds yesterday. I do think his stamina is one of his weaknesses. Not a major one, but it's there.
