The fascinating rivalry continues: Roy Jones is currently an expert to HBO (not yet signed I believe) while Antonio Tarver does the same job at Showtime during the fights. Without a doubt The Magic Man's voice and talking skills are the better of the two plus he knows the game very well and has a sharp eye for the action, his commentary is well prepared and well executied. And Roy Jones is - well, Roy Jones, improvisational, fast talking, entertaining with a lot of knowledge and interesting observations, makes the whole telecast dynamic. Over the past dozen commentating jobs I'd say Tarver had the edge but Roy definitely took last night, loved his stuff during Martinez-Dzinziruk, he's so, so much better than Steward or Lennox, I mean not only more "voice action" (Merchant, Lampley and even Lederman are well past their primes), but there's a lot less idiocy like 3 commentators including Steward failing to figure out which ****ing hand sparked Paul Williams out. Now can you imagine Roy, Antonio and let's say the philosophical Merchant on the same team? Madness! Pac-Floyd would deserve the kind of expert commentating. Who won last night's clash of commentators?
Steward is terrible. His voice is often full of concern, and whatever happens he manages to turn around and say I told you so or was about to say, plus the amount of mistakes and bias of late makes him hard to bear. Again I'll point to the obvious Williams-Martinez rematch, a fight dominated by Maravilla constanly landing the KO blow of overhand left, Steward not only didn't recognize Sergio's clean punching and effectiveness, but somehow saw Williams doing everything right, and then missed the monsterous KO punch and predicted it was a right hand - I don't even think he realized it was a fight between southpaws. Jacobs-Pirog was just as unbearable. I guess he's a good guy but not very good a commentator, and when Bob Papa is the best expert on the telecast - recognizing the left hand and Martinez' clean shots - that's says something about the average quality of the telecast. Again, nothing personal, but Roy is not a hard choice over Manny.
Tarver is an awesome analyst, and he has the advantage of being more articulate than Roy. But despite that Roy has better insight, and his comments are more interesting and impressive.
Watching the HBO reply right now and it's apparent to me that Roy is the superior commentator over Tarver; better than Stewart - for that matter.
Manny Steward is the real life version if Cleveland from Family Guy - I swear! Haven't had a chance to check out last nighs fights yet - but I'll be sure to so. I do enjoy Roy and Antonio's commentary, as you say far better than Steward. Steward waits for the fight to unfold, then when it ends he usually says 'this is exactly what I thought would happen'
are you serious!?! jones & manny talk some ****, they just state the obvious and even that they get wrong some time tarver points out specific things in the fight, plus he is more funnier i will admit roy jones is improving
Jones' commentary was excellent last night. I love when Kellerman or Lampley says something and Jones corrects them. Too funny.
Jones and I don't speak the same language, unfortunately, so I really can't evaluate his commentary. You guys surely know that Kellerman performs fellatio at least twice during each show...if it's a two fight show. One BJ if there is only one fight. Tarver does a decent job; he is improving.
i gotta admit there was one point in last nights broadcast where kellerman was great. in the 6th while jones and lampley were going on about how great martinez looked and how much like jones he was, kellermen made sure to point out that dzinziruk was winning the round and landing cleanly, and not just cheering for sergio. he also REPEATEDLY stressed that martinez is the real champ regardless of the sanctioning bodies
Don't get me wrong...I like Kellerman, but his man-love on Jones is sometimes too much for me personally. But Jones likes the adulation...and the fellating.
