What is Mayorga's Place In History?

For those of us who speak Spanish, at least for me, it was evident Mayorga was clowning with Cotto all the time. I never saw genuine hate, dislike, or even disrespect in his words any more than a child taunting another child.

 

Yea, I could tell he was just trying to sell the fight when he also said he genuinely dislikes Cotto.

He gave some bull**** reason when Jim Gray AZZked him why don't you like Cotto.

I met many guys like him during my childhood in Cuba; they taunt you, they test you, they are always measuring you, and most of them eventually get to be very good friends.

 

Couldn't agree more with this assessment. Mayorga is an exceptional fighter, who always gave 100%. Despite his trash talking, and out the ring antics, Mayorga deserves some recognition.

Mayorga was a special character in boxing.

The Ballsiest Fighter I can think of

His KO of Lewis was great, the Forrest KO was amazing, he then won the rematch, he lost to Spinks in a match that was all wrong

he reinvented himself at 154 getting a belt but soon lost to Oscar

he won the early roudns vs Tito and was hitting him with bombs before his bravery betrayed him

He beat Vargas in a war

He was leading Mosley and got KO'd

He fought Cotto and hit him a lot and fought brave

He will be remembered as an undisputed champion showman and a guy not afraid to get in the ring with anybody

 

He will not be remembered much. He never beat a great fighter. Lost to the good ones he fought. Cotto outclassed him and made him quit and Cotto was the smaller guy.

 

He is not the reason I fell in love with boxing. He is a talker at press conferences with a decent punch who loses most of his fights.

I fell in love with boxing because of guys like Hearns and Leonard and Hagler coming to fight and putting it all on the line and bringing professionalism with excitement. Professionalism can be exciting if the fighters come to fight and back up the talk with winning. Not a guy who says outrageous things only to quit in the ring. I don't knock the quitting since boxing is a tough sport, but I knock the talk and bravado only to quit.

 

You won't remember him much, you obviously dislike him. But he will be remembered by the rest. And that's OK.

 

Yeah sure you did because Hagleror Leonard never had the same bravado as Mayorga. You live in a dream elitist world. Professionalism? Puhlease. Quitting? You a pro fighter? If not shut the **** up.

I don't know him to really not like him. What I don't like is how they brought a guy out again who had not done anything in boxing in recent times and they made this a ppv fight. He was never a great fighter. There were other more deserving guys who were at 154 who deserve a shot at the title. And after the fight last night, Margarito is getting another shot at the title for not earning it. It has become more about earning money than giving deserving contenders the shot at the title. You guys act like you love boxing and that this was good for boxing because you want to be entertained by Mayorga. Arum and King got some good money last night that is what happened.

 

Hagler and Leonard and Hearns showed more heart than Mayorga ever has. Are you kidding? My posts before the fight are clear. I knew Mayorga would lose. Hagler and Hearns and Leonard came to fight and won against top fighters. Mayorga did not. This was about Don King and Bob Arum making money, and they did. The top contenders who deserve a shot at the title were the ones who lost out.
