gas I didnt pay attention but do you mean Steve Smoger? Or Mercante jr before Martinez vs Dzin? Mercantes an ass anyway. Constantly trying to be the centre of attention

 

I dont get why a guy like mercante jr got the final fight that steve smoger guy is a way better ref, same with kenny bayless not doing the main cotto fight.

 

I thought that a bit odd as well. Anyone who knows anything about this sport knows that Smoger is the gold standard of officiating. It doesn't seem right that a lesser ref got the big assignment ahead of him.

 

Mercante seems to be always lookin for some camera time though, it's true.

eg.. the Cotto vs Zab was bad one with him. And tons others too im sure.

I didn't notice Mercante was the ref when the fight started and then I heard him, off camera, say to Martinez "Don't swagger." (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) or smth like that and I immediately knew who the ref was.

Did you notice him, by the way basically tackling fighters when the bell would ring.

I was tryin to remember the one "recently" where he really acted an ass.

I forgot about that one!! That's when throwin in the towel wasn't good enough for him and he cleared the ring of everybody and ordered ol' Foreman to take some more ass kickin' with his broke ass knee! (not REALLY funny, but you know...)

Yeah, I noticed that as well. It's like the guy got bored without anything to do in there so he went over the top with breaking the fighters at the bell so he had something to do.

The man always has to find a way to inject himself into a fight and that's where he and Smoger differ.... Merchante gets in the way where as Double S keeps his ego in check and allows the fighters to fight.

 

Wait!! I seen the fight, but not that clip! WTF is wrong with Mercante?? Why would he be cussin' about the action in the ring like that??

Maybe he'll land a HW gig and Wlad can "let one slip".... then all the fighters can line up and tell him to suck it up and do his job.:yep

He's now on the same shelf for me as Lawrence Cole. Cole implied somebody could quit cause they were in the lead on cards... and rightfully he was punished.

Now this mother ****er in there cussin' bout **** and tryin' to give Foreman pointers on the fly in there??? Got to be shittin' me mayn!

 

I don't know why but I've always liked Mercante Jr. I can see why so many people hate him though, especially after the Cotto/Foreman fight. I've always thought he was pretty good for the most part (except for a few fights, Foreman being one and one of Sweet Pea's fights where Sweet Pea almost killed the dude because Mercante took so long to stop it). Other than the Foreman fight, I think he's done a good job in all of Cotto's other fights where he's been the ref.

Good refs try to stay out of **** and out of the way of camera's..etc. not the other way around. I mean, this cat acts like he's pretty damn sure most of the fans are there to see him!
