The question and points to consider.
Why do people consider Bute vs Magee as a bad fight??

Now Im not expecting Magee to win, and am expecting Bute to get Magee out of there, looking impressive in the process.
Magee doesnt seem to have a very good chin and is a bit slow but consider this with Magee.

Magee went unbeaten in his first 22 fights scoring wins over Makambi, Thysse, Jimenez and Cherifi. Now none of them are world beaters but all were fair victories at the time.

In Magees 23rd fight he faced Robin Reid who was still world rated and considered a force. Reid had just lost a debateable decision to Ottke and went on to challenge Lacy and beat future Bute challenger J Brinkley. Magee went down 4 times but some felt he still deserved the victory and it was a very close fight. So losing a close debateable decision to a top 10 world rated fighter is not bad.

Magee later challenged undefeated European champ Tsypko in Germany losing by SD in a fight many thought he was robbed in. Tsypko was considered unlucky by many against Lacy and fought Lacy to a MD loss. So once again this is not a bad result against another world rated fighter.
There could be an arguement that Magee could have won these 2 fights.

After this Magee challenged undefeated C Froch. Magee was put down in the first but went on to fight Froch into the 11th round where he was stopped. 2 of the judges had the scores close at 94-95 & 95-96. I felt this was a poor Froch performance where I felt if Froch had of done more would have scored an earlier stoppage. It was on this fight that I questioned weather Froch would become a world class fighter, rather than give Magee credit.

Magee went up to LHW where he fought T Oakey. Most felt Magee had won, but 2 of the judges scored a draw whilst the 3rd had Magee a clear winner.

Magee finally got his moment when he fought away to the favoured 51-2-0 Larsen scoring a 7 round TKO. Larsen looked unlucky to many against Ottke and had only lost on a cut before that. This win scored Magee the vacant European title.

With this had Magee been given the decisions, Magee could be a 37-1 European champion with wins over Reid, Tsypko and Larsen and just the one 11 round KO loss to undefeated Froch in a close fight up until that the KO.

Magee is a better SMW than A Abraham and A Green and has acheived more as a SMW than Dirrell, who because people recognise give more credit for beating.

Bute - Magee is a far more significant (removing the S6 factor) SMW fight than Ward - Abraham. Abraham is 1-2 in his last 3 fights with the victory being due to injury and the last loss being very clear. I would also (removing the S6 factor) say Bute - Magee is a better SMW fight than Froch - Johnson, when you note that in Johnsons 12 SMW fights he is 6-6-0 and his best SMW victory is Green.

So why do people consider Bute - Magee such a bad fight?

Magee was offered a place in The Super 6 at one stage after one of the fighters dropped out.
Magee turned down the offer as he was #1 contender to Sartisons WBA regular title at the time.

Now would Magee be thought of the sam had he gone into the Super 6?
I expect he would have been thought of in higher esteem due to getting name recognition that he currently doesnt have

because bute is supposed to be the #1 guy at 168 and is fighting a guy who is probably ranked #15 at best and just fought a club fighter named brinkley
and he and his fans hide behind the excuse that all the other elite guys are "busy"

Good post.. Haven't seen much of Magee nor am I hating on him, but I would just like to see Bute fight a true top competitor.. Like the Kesslers, the Hopkins, and the Frochs.. I know he doesn't have much options now though with the super six going on and everything, but I really hope this Bute/Kessler fight comes off..

Magee is a good solid fighter , he is a former olympian and since switching trainers from harry hawkins to bernardo checa he is in flying form , most yanks think he is a bum because they have never heard of him .

Im no fan of Magee. I have never enjoyed watching him. But my point is to both of you is that some consider Ward the top man and others Froch, but neither is facing as accomplished a SMW next. Froch didnt fight as good a SMW in his last fight and Bika isnt as accomplished as Magee and nor is Green who Ward fought.
So Bute fighting Magee when you get past the fact Magee isnt popular isnt a bad fight.

Now I am a fan of Frochs but look at the whole picture

Possibly. I couldnt be for sure but would note that Magee has done alot more in his career at this time than Dirrell.
People discredit fighters if they dont know who they are

Thats often the problem. When a fighter isnt known they get discredited by some people but would note that Magee has done alot more in his career at this time than Dirrell.

To me, Bute is ranked #1.. I have no problem with him fighting Magee atm, because of the super six, but after Magee, I really would like for the Kessler fight to come off..

of course I know. Let me just rebut by saying that I knew of Bute, Pascal, and Lemieux several years before you did.

Of course from Ireland you would also know well of Magee, better than most.
I dont expect Magee to win and think Bute will be impressive in victory, but a win over a world rated European SMW champ is not a bad result.
Magee was in The Rings top 10 until recently when they had a change round. I think that was for G Johnsons arrival for a win over Green coming off a loss which isnt as impressive as an away win over Larsen

because he aint been on US Tv so commentators tell 99% of boxing fans who is good and who is not

Magee was a top level am, lost only a disputed decision to typsko and was beaten by froch in a great fight

Hes unbeaten in years and is coming in hungry motivated and in good form - he may well lose, but its a lot better fights than a lot of bull**** world title fights people actually think are good fights
