Watching Fabulous 4 (again) and I'm always fascinated by Duran Leonard 1. Why don't referees leave guys to fight on the inside. Too often refs are eager to call 'break' effectively giving the front footed stalking type fighter no chance! This makes the fights less entertaining due to the massive advantage the back footed boxer style fighter has . Gotta love the old days.
there was a ref last night can't remember the fight but all you heard was ''stop break....stoopppp break...''. ****ing annoying. Those days were special. Listening to Manny Steward interview that Relentless posted while back last night. Them guys punched through there opponents. Mixture of styles all had great ability. Amazing talents.
It's a real shame, but I don't see boxing reaching these heights again. Hearns v Leonard on now what a show of guts balls heart and the will to win. Two things ruining boxing the referees calling 'break' too soon and the amount of weight classes and belts.
yeah great point on the inside work being stopped. Smoger allows fighters to work out of a clinch. To many dive in far far to early. I'm seriously pissed off at the mo with fighters pushing heads down to avoid inside work or shouldering the guy off. Foster the other week warned Sykes 3 times...3 times...Sykes kept doing it and he didn't do a thing. I'm a massive fan of working inside it's great to watch and great fights are the ones that ebb and flow.
:deal Guys like Toney are natural's. Have a sixth sense of how to time punches and roll. It's amazing. Such skill in close quarters. Had a convo with my mate the other day he said ''what sport you thinks better then football or boxing''. I said Boxing and one reason was how guys like Toney and many before him fight at close quarters with hands down knowing that one punch could serious damage them.
Hey beeston you will not be dissapointed but you may look at todays fights and think where did it all Ho wrong. Mandanda it totally f***s up potential epic fights. Styles make fights and no better fights than a rangey fighter v an inside fighter , but to often like you say the outside fighter illegally avoids inside fighting, and is also helped by the early calls by egotistical referees. So instead of the rangey outside fighter having to use his intelligence and ring smarts to keep the inside fighter off him, he just has to drop his head tie up and wait for the call effectively ruining the fight.
Fighters like SRL that could do it inside an out are truly one offs, there a special breed.. Also the likes of Toney, Duran, Chavez etc are being taken away from the game I mean look at Cortez in the Hatton V Mayweather fight...
Cortez is a f***ing maggot, not only the Hatton fight he messed up. Everytime there's a big fight my first question is 'whose the ref?' If its that waste of skin I can tell you the winner. God was having a bad day when that sperm slipped through , and to think the world was only one wank away from not having to see that bent c**t.
Let the guys fight. If they are in a clinch then break free and fight. If they are going to hold too much, then deduct a point. If they are holding with one arm and punching with the other then let them do it. Our refs used to let our guys fight and we had decent inside fighters - Joe, Woods, Hatton etc Not so sure now. Let them fight.
Refs don't have the balls to deduct for excessive holding, watching the burns fight last night and laryea constantly went in with his head low then raised his head lookin to head butt burns chin. Now oconner isnt a bad ref but he didn't even deduct for that so he's not gonna deduct for holding. It's a shame its ruining the sport I try and introduce new fans to the sport nut they get bored with the constant breaks.
