I just re-watched the fight and to me Ali outscored Frazier. I have Ali winning more rounds than him. I think Ali won the fight how about you? I Used the 10 point MUST system.
Ali did land more shots, I will give you that, but there were rounds where ali just gave them away clowning in the hope frazier would expire. By contrast the biggest, clearest rounds belonged to frazier who hurt ali way more times. I remember my score card being the same as arthur mercante.
Ali rope a doped a lot and that allowed Frazier to score a lot. For me Ali clearley land more and thus scored more.
SlyCoop, On the 10-Point system I hope you gave 'Smokin Joe' 10-8 scores in Round 11 and 15. Judge Bill Recht, scored it 11-4-0 for Joe,,,,,,,,he was perfect in his scoring.
ali may of scored more but thats why fights are scored round by round -the over all punch totals only tell part of the story. suficient force has to be taken into acount on a round by round basis. Frazier drove ali around the ring and hurt him, there were two rounds that could have been scored 10-8 for frazier under the points system. Frazier won a lot of the exchanges and fired back with more meat on his shots with good accuracy. Ali had never been hit so often either. I understand where you are coming from though, you are not wrong just in the minority as to how you see it.
I did give Frazier 10-8 for round 15 but round 11 Ali slipped. 11-4 ha I don't know what fight u were watching. That was not a perfect score. That was a joke score by the Ref.
Not sure of my exact scorecard, but suffice it to say you're pretty damn looney if you believe Ali won the fight.:good
I think its allot closer on a round by round basis than many think, Frazier lost the first third of the fight and plenty of rounds after that Ali outscored him. I think something like 8-7 to Frazier is reasonable
Bill Recht's scoring was ridiculously biased against Ali. He should have gone to specsavers. Joe definitely won that fight, but by a 9 - 6 or 8-6-1 margin.
In those days wasnt the person who did most of the clinches get punished for it thats the impression i got when listening to the commentator and all ali did was hug frazier the whole fight. In terms of 10 point must system ali didnt throw any power shots did he? compared to fraziers 100 odd so surely frazier wins.
Bill Recht, In his scoring reasoning; 'I like the aggressive fighter. I am not into that flash-n-jazz. I'll score a round for the heavier puncher, and the one who employs effective-aggressiveness.' 'Joe Frazier was the aggressor throughout. And by far, landed the harder punches. Yes he did get hit. But the punches he took were on his act of aggression, not Ali's act of aggression. Ali was fighting backwards, in the majority of the round. In my heart, I just cannot give the fighter a round when he's fighting backwards, unless he outscores his opponent 2-1 in total punches.' 'For instance, the Sonny Liston fight, Ali (Cassius Clay) won differently. He was fighting backwards and scoring, but Sonny wasn't. This fight here in the Garden was different, as Joe was clearly landing hard punches.'
