After this weekend with Sergio Martinez beating Serhiy Dzinziruk and Miguel Cotto beating Ricardo Mayorga both by stoppage I've decided to make a new top 10. 1. Floyd Mayweather Jr. I've drooped him from the #1 spot for his inacctivity before. However I have reconsidered my stance on this. If he dose not at least sign to fight someone soon he's going to drop down and possibily off this list. For now he's boxing best boxer and gets the #1 spot. To hold this poistion he should face Manny Pacquiao if he beats Mosley, the Andre Berto/Victor Ortiz winner or who ever wins out of Timothy Bradley and Amir Khan. 2. Sergio Martinez. I think that Mayweather, Nonito Donaire and Manny Pacquiao are slightly better when it comes to the skills/talent/abillity. However it is close. What puts him above Donaire and Pacquiao is his resume. A close loss to Paul Williams, A win over Kelly Pavlik, a second round ko in a rematch with Williams and beating Serhiy Dzinziruk. While this list of boxers may not turn out to be all time greats they are all very solid boxers. Giving Martinez at the very least a better resume than Mayweather, Pacquiao and Donaire. What Martinez needs to do to become #1? This is tough he's so close. However I'm not sure what's out there for him. He deserves the Mayweather or Pacquiao/Shane Mosley winner fights but I think they are too small to fight at 160. If he can come down to 154 than I think a fight can be maide. 3. Nonito Donaire. Donaire might be the second most talented/skilled guy in the sport behind Mayweather. Yes I think he has more allaround skills than his countryman Manny Pacquiao. He dose not have his experance. He seams to not be able to get big fights. I had Donaire at #1 on my last list. He's not being punished. I just fell that all things considred Mayweather and Martinez deserve to be ratted higher. What dose Donaire need to do to be #1? Unlike Martinez Donaire is in a pretty good weight class right now. His opitions are the winner of Joseph Agbeko vs. Abner Mares, Anselmo Moreno and Koki Kameda. That's just at bantamweight. I thinkat some point he's going to have to move up in weight. He's young 28 and has a great future ahead of him. 4. Manny Pacquiao. I will stop a second for any Pacquiao fans to write angry commits if they have not allready for me putting mayweather at the #1 spot. Call me a ***** if you like. I don't care. For the record I hate the terms "*******" and "*****". I try not to use them. Ok Pacquiao fans have you stopped writting your angry commits? why is Pacquiao #4? I'm not questioning his talent. It's his resume that has him at this spot. Rather or not Ricky Hatton was damaged goods. Stoping him in 2 rounds was very impresive. However in his three bouts since he has taken progresively downwards steps 1. Miguel Cotto 2. Joshua Clottey and 3. Antonio Margarito. Yes he won all of those fights in a onesided fashion. However he was suposed to. What dose Pacquiao need to do to be #1? The good news is that Pacquiao is that Pacquiao is in very good poistionto take back the #1 spot. He needs a solid win over Shane Mosley in May. Mosley has always had his problems with boxers who can keep their distance from him. That's not Pacquiao. Pacquiao is in for a tougher fight than a lot of people think. Unless Mosley has gotten old and I don't think he has, he's going to beat Pacquiao. If he beats Mosley he should be #1. 5. Juan Manuel Marquez. I think Marquez might have peaked at #3 before he lost to Mayweather. He has solid wins over Joel Casamayor, Juan Diaz (twice) and Michael Katsidis. What dose Marquez need to do to be #1? This is a long shot at this point in his career. First of all he needs to move up to 140. Even at his age he's heads and shoulders better than everyone else at 135 right now. Winning a championship at 140 won't make him #1, but it is a very deep devision. If he can win two or three fights against the best 140ers he will deserve to be in the conversation. 6. Timothy Bradley. Right now with his win over Devon Alexander Bradley is the best at 140. A weight class as deep as any in the sport at this point in time. He still needs to fight Amir Khan, but intell than he's the man at 140. What dose Bradley need to do to be #1? First of all bet Khan. This will be no easy task. Than beat Marquez after that move up to 147. 7. Jean Pascal. In terms of skill/talent/ability Pascal might be the worst on this list. So why is he on the list at all? He has a win over Chad Dawson and a draw with Bernard Hopkins. Both should have beaten him. You can argue that the Hopkins draw was a gift. However he should have never had Hopkins down once let alone twice. What dose Pascal need to to to be #1? Honestly I don't think he can. I think his stay inside the top 10 is going to be short. I think Hopkins is going to beat him in their rematch. I also would pick Dawson in a rematch. What dose he need to do? Keep surprising me. 8. Bernard Hopkins. I debated with myself who to rank higher Hopkins or Pascal. I decided to go with the officil result and rank Pascal highr. I think it was a fight that Hopkins should have won outright. Hopkins is an all time great. At 46 he's a top 10 boxer. Like Pacqiao he's riding the wave of a big win over Kelly Pavlik. However what he has done sense is not as impresive. Wins over Enrique Ornelas and Roy Jones Jr. Who was coming off a first round stoppage loss to Danny Green. A fight in which neither Hopkins or Jones looked all that impresive. I think had Jones been willing to take more risks he might have been able to stop Hopkins. Than there is his draw with Pascal. Like Pavlik he should have boxed circles around Pascal. Hopkins tends to put himself in holes like he did against Jermain Taylor. Going down twice is a lot to make up for. What dose Hopkins need t do to be #1? First beat Pascal like he's suposed to. After that I'm not sure unify against Tavoris Cloud or move up to cruiserweight to fight fellow Philadelphian Steve Cunningham. I don't think he has enough time to make it all the way to #1. However beating Pascal, Cloud and Cunningham would be a great way to end his career. 9. Juan Manuel Lopez. Like Pascal I'm not 100% sold on Lopez as a great boxer. He has been winning and beat a very solid group of oppoents. What dose Lopez need to do to be #1? Start off by fighting and beating Yuriorkis Gamboa. Thanmove on from there. 10. Wladimir Klitschko. Boxing is about hitting and not getting hit. Of curse being 6′ 6½″ with a reach of 81″ makes doing that a lot easier. He might have a questionable chin. However he has not lost in 7 years. What dose Klitchko need to do to be #1? A lot. When it comes to being #1 Heavyweights are at a disadvantage. This may not be fair. It is just how it works. Well that's my top 10 for now. It changes all the time since I think it should change all the time. My top 10 is never set in stone, and like every top 10 list complety subjective. So of course I hope you like it not nessacrly agree with my order or reasons. If you don't say so. Ive expresed my opinion that is what a message board is for to expres opinions in this case our opinions about boxing.
cotto, clottey and margo are 3 of the top 5 welters of these recent years. pac is fighting the 4th one in mosley this May. after this, the only one remaining to complete the five is mayweather and we all know that pac wants to fight him. that's what an elite welter like pac is supposed to do, fight all the top guys of his current division. in contrast, mayweather has only fought one of these guys (mosley). that's why pac is currently rated #1 at welter above mayweather.
If Pacquiao beats Mosley I'll move him up. Intel than. He has not done enough to be rated higher. Perhaps if he'd be willing to fight Mayweather or Berto. I'd rank him higher. Even fighting Bradley or Alexander before he lost to Bradley would have been more impresive than Cotto, Clotty and Margarito.
your top 10 is of course your own personal opinion which inevitably includes your personal biases, fighter loyalties, etc. but it is also my opinion that your list is greatly flawed by the same biases and loyalties.
Pac will have had 3 fights in the time Mayweather has had 1 (4 fights after Mosley). Yet you punish Pac, who's atleast fighting, and beaten the guy who beat the guy Mayweather beat and two other top welters, but Mayweather rides high at number one still. Just doesn't make sense. Maybe Pac should fight once every 2 years aswell to get more credit for his wins
Had a quick look over your list and had planned to read it in depth till I saw Pac at 4. Not going to bother now, there's nothing you can say, no justification, for Pacquiao at 4.
1) Mayweather 2) Pacquiao 3) Donaire 4) Martinez 5) JMM 6) W. Klitschko 7) Bradley 8. Ward 9) V. Klitschko 10) Lopez 11) Wonjongkam 12) Segura
you're reasoning for ranking PBF #1 already exposed your undying love for the guy. And ranking Pac #4 testifies to you being a genuine hater. lol Credibitlity down the drain if not already in the sewers..
I'm coining a new word: "Nonitard" - a boxing fan infatuated with Nonito Donaire to the extent that he/she believes they deserve to be in the top 3 overall P4P best boxers in the world.
