Cotto should retire

he at least deserves a chance at redemption against Margaritto.

Plus he still draws so he'll continue as long as theres good money on the table. Im not sure he can improve his legacy much now but i imagine we'll see him a few more times before he retires. especially if arum keeps offering him another chance at pacman.

 

So he should just forget about his $1M paydays against reasonable opposition? The guy is only 30 years old, he's no Haye.

History shows that a lot of top boxers who retire early make a comeback later on because they are missing out on the "payout years", have the "unfinished business" feeling and end getting pummeled by guys they would have walked trough at their retirement age.

Quitting on a relatively young age doesn't work out that often.

 

He’ll do his legacy a great deal of good if he avenges that loss to Margarito. And if he comes out of that relatively unscathed, I could see him beating youngsters like Chavez Jr and Alvarez while he’s still got some fight left in him. But I agree, though. The Margarito, Clottey and Pacquiao fights have been burning his ribbon from both ends. He’s not got long at the top.

 

From what I saw whenever Mayorga stepped it up and put the pressure on Had Cotto in trouble (look at round 7 to see what Mayorga's pressure did to Cotto). Margo will do that the whole fight without a backward step.

Loved watching Cotto over the years, but stylistically Margo is the worst matchup that can be made for Cotto. But for all the wrongness of this fight, it's also the right fight for Cotto to get his redemption. But he will need to find another level from somewhere or else I see a repeat of their first fight happening all over again.

But do I think he should retire? No, because he can still get a few more decent fights. Maybe against Canelo, or an all Puerto Rico clash against Cintron, or how about with Martinez?

We must have been watching different fights. In the fight I saw Cotto completely took apart Mayorga and was NEVER in trouble, hurt, or even buzzed. Cotto dominated nearly every round in the fight and stopped Mayorga in the 12th.

 

cotto shouldnt retire he has plenty of options just never fight pac again or a guy like mayweather or martinez. the rest he can handle. I really want to see him fight alvarez and a margarito redemption fight, cintron as well.

He can beat Berto, Canelo, JCC Jr, Margarito, Cintron, Vanes and pretty much anybody at 147/154 except for Pac . So no he shouldnt retire.

Yes you are right we definitely watched different fights. I watched a fight where Cotto had success with the jab and was winning rounds, but Mayorga had a lot of success with his burst of pressure when he attacked. Even the most loyal of Cotto fans must agree on that.

Where did I say that Mayorga was winning rounds? where did I saw that Cotto was getting hurt, or buzzed? What I said was when Mayorga pressued he had Cotto in some trouble. I stand by that still, there were moments where Mayprga was winging in punches and at times he was a little overwhelmed. Of course nowhere near the extent at which he was against Margo, but then Mayorga doesnt have the relentless style of Margo but I assure you if he did, he would take Cotto out of his comfort zone and it very hard for him to get off with his own work.
