Why did it take him 12 rounds to finish a washed up Mayorga when Tito and Hoya did it much earlier? Did he take punishment? Did Mayorga walk through alot of shots? I thought this fight would end alot quicker. :deal
he looked rusty and lethargic, at times he showed flashes of the old cotto when he backed mayorga up against the ropes but for the most part looked sloppy, got hit with a few shots he shouldn't have but also landed some vicious punches.
Maybe beause Oscar and Tito were much better fighters, harder punchers, and werent as undersized as Cotto?
i think it could have been just ring rust, he had surgery and hasn't fought since last july, he looked the same way he did against urkal and jennings, i think margo would probably beat him again but lets see it.
I still think Cotto is too small for 154 tbh, just look at him there with Mayorga, dude was much smaller.
I'm a huge Cotto fan so it hurts me to say this, but Cotto of old will never come back again. Cotto of now is here to stay and I doubt he beats Margo. Hes fights standing taller and his footwork is a lot better, but thats it. I don't see a right handed Cotto of the past and I don't see the body work. Cotto would have stopped Mayorga mid rounds back in the day. Maybe 154 is too big for him idk, but his punches didn't seem as hard as before. I wish him luck against Margo and of course I would be rooting him for him, but it will be a looooong hard night for the man.
Mayorga was not the shot, overweight, careless brawler we thought he was going to be. He actually paced himself very well, and remained competitive throughout the whole course of the fight. It’s no surprise that Cotto – a small, less effective light-middleweight – took the full 12 rounds to get him out of there. There were moments where he looked very sharp. However, there’s no denying that he is damaged goods, and can no longer war with people like he used to. He is hit far too easily, and can be pushed into his defensive shell without a problem. 154 is a dangerous zone for him, and he needs to be kept away from the aggressive, hard-hitting guys.
He's short and has short arms, with a big head. I agree. But you can't use that as an excuse dude, he's too big for 147 which means he's a natural 154lber now.
Mayorga hit cotto to many times for my liking. At this stage i think margo who throws way more variety of punches and has better stamina than mayorga stops cotto again. My concern is this, if margo hurts cotto, the demons of what happen last time could haunt cotto and play on his mind, margo truly could be cotto worst nightmare relived.
12 rds against a guy who is through has nothing and whose only chance was landing something wild.....the perfect setup for an elite to blast his hapless opponent inside 5! yet Im more impressed that Mayorga was able to last 12 to be honest. Cotto is now just a pretty good fighter and thats it. Rematch Margarito win or get out.
