I'm trying to think of boxers who were unspectacular, who didn't do much, plodded along or maybe underachieved until they got that one shot at a big name/title fight and went on to do great things... Steve Robinson I suppose, whilst he didnt rule the world, did very well for himself after a shot out of the blue Fighters you werent expecting much from but took their chance and did some great things, possibly over-achieving...??? :think
Slightly odd one but Carl Froch? A lot of us talked about him getting found out at world level while he was at domestic level, with his low guard and laid-back approach in the ring, yet as soon as they put that WBC belt round his waste he is fighting a who's who of top names in and around his division, goes into fights against big names as the favourite and is talked about as a fringe P4P candidate. He is one of those fighters who has gained a load of extra fans not because of the belt but because of the way he has fought.
Ricky Burns aye Carl Froch I disagree. I always thought he had what it takes, OK his defence was never great but he won convincingly against everyone he faced
Great idea for a thread and I will no doubt enjoy reading this stuff. From very recently I would say the Belgian guy who beat Foster Jr. He was completely dismissed before the fight but put on a performance that merits a world tilte fight very soon.
But the majority would never have said he would get to where he is now when he was facing people like Magee for the British title, the majority view was that he was not special.
Froch is a good shout. He was obviously dominant at domestic level but he wouldn't have been the first to do so and yet be badly exposed at world level. Despite his shortcomings he's 4-1 at world level and also has a KO win over Magee who will be challenging for a title soon.
yeah but he was more of a one-night only kinda guy im thinking more people who went on to have a reign at the top or be in a few good fights at top level. I quite rate rees though, i reckon he can work up to european level maybe more
