He's not a bad fighter, he's just a solid fighter. Make him move up to 168, and he will be beaten by any of the top guys.

Great Middle Weights should be able to compete with the guys above at 168 if need be.

He's just a solid fighter all around, does nothing special.

So Marvin Hagler wasn't 'great' because he never moved to 168lbs?

Good post Trout Mask. I will add Carlos Monzon to that reply to Kool.

PK, Martinez has already 'come up' a division from 154. Should all junior middles be able to fight super middleweights?

To be fair TM surely this type of thread is better than any number of the ones dealing with purse splits and contract negotiations? At least its about boxing rather than business....

Martinez is quality. He's getting some momentum going. I appreciate his approach, he clearly has got a fairly decent dig all round, he can pull big shots out of his ass and whilst not completely iron jawed (seen him wobbled a couple of times, a big puncher could get to him moreso IMO, mostly a hunch) he is tough, never gives up and makes up for middle round lulls with explosive work in the championship rounds.

If he goes on to beat say, Sturm, Pirog, whoever the best out the current high-end 'prospect'/contenders and keeps his run of form going I don't think there's any doubt he'd have established himself as a quality fighter.

I actually think 160 looks like it could get as interesting as it has looked in a long time. The top ten or so is, for the most part, not fighting regularly enough and not fighting each other. Golovkin, Njikam, Sylvester, Lemiuex, Chavez Jr, etc etc should all be trying to fight each other, or their promotors should be looking for it. Koborov hasn't made much progress, the great will they won't they between Gennady and Hassan has been going on for well over a year, Chavez Jr looks set to fight Zbik which will tell us a bit about exactly where each guy 'is at' and Lemiuex looks set to smash up another 10-20 guy in Rubio.Macklin Vs Gevor sounds a good idea though IMO. If Gevor wins I'd like to see him in with Pirog.

I would love to see P-Dub in the mix as well. These guys get more experience and some momentum going whilst Sergio batters Sturm and snags all the belts (hypothetically, ruling out the 'interim' guys ) and then he has a guy that is reall going to challenge him.

I'm not interested in him fighting Froch, Ward or Bute at all to be honest.

Thank you Flea I hope I have redeemed myself in your eyes?

I was going to include Monzon myself but the 168lbs division had yet to be introduced when he reigned as 160lbs champion.

Does it detract from either Hagler or Monzon that they 'merely' won a title at one weight (and made multiple defences establishing themselves as undisputed No1 in the division)?

What happened to dominating one division, why the constant pressure to win 'titles' at multiple weights these days?

See what I mean about threads like these now? They can lead to more interesting things.

Monzon of course, was criticised for not facing Bob Foster up at light heavy IIRC. Lucky, as I reckon Foster would've wrecked him :yep

Same with Hagler and Spinks/ Qawi. IMHO in most circumstances theres no shame in sticking around an dominating your natural division.

    Marvin Hagler did'nt need to.

His division was stacked with talent and primal competition.

Sergio Martinez is fighting in a crap weight division.
