I don't remember Floyd being very popular before he became a big dick. He was just another elite Black American athlete, something we have in abundance.

There is a difference between the 86% of Argentinians who are immigrants of European descent vs Mestizo's which is what you're talking about.

I think the term "White" in English refers also to the culture of European ancestry, not just the genealogy. For a "Great White Hope" to arise, I think he has to fit in with the globally hegomonic white culture, and growing up poor in Latin America just does not seem to fit with the historic want for the white face of privilege to prevail in the sport. That's not what people mean nowadays when they say GWH but that's sure as hell where it came from.

Otherwise Martinez, Maidana, Barrera, Locche, DLH, and probably a good 40 percent of all Latinos would be called white simply because their phenotype doesn't overtly resemble an indigenous skin pigmentation.

He's a White Latino, but IMO, a "Great White Hope" has to fit the structure I mentioned above.

He's white. Argentina is made up from Italians and Spaniards. They consider themselves white.

The only difference is this watered down pussified society is too politically correct to put the word Great WHITE Hope. There's no household white boxer, so they choose the most similar thing to play the role. He's a "model minority" and "uncle tom" who's supposed to be White America's hope against the outspoken colored man. He's a foreigner but White America's media even backed him over one of their very own, the same guy that flagged their colors during the '96 Olympics hosted right in their own country.

He has indigenous traits and white skin color- but my point is that "White" means more than skin color. It's a cultural identity which does not apply the same way to Latin America the way it does in North America and Europe.

Well put, but I was merely arguing non maliciously that it may be a factor of his meteoric rise to fame and universal likeability. RJJ a relatively well like person in and out of the ring never got this adulation in such as short time, matter of fact, he was still relatively disproportionately unpopular after the Toney and Hopkins fight and that was the great time for boxing.

Well, spainards are white but still considered caucasion. Sergio is caucasion as most people from the southern part of S america are
more spainard than indian. Alot of natives of uruguay, paraguay, and
especially argentina are more caucasoid decent than indian, as is
sergio. That's why he has green eyes.
