Well I can only speak for myself but my love for Martinez has nothing to do with race. He's just a very good boxer who's been the underdog in a few fights and proved people wrong. He's really exciting to watch and on top of his game.

And he's very sexy.

Race is subjective and not some pure biological fact and I think that's why these conversations never go anywhere. What if Martinez is 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, or 1/16 Indian? Where do you draw the line between white and non-white?

 

And his Irish half is half-catholic / half protestant !

The term 'great white hype' is traditionally applied to caucasian fighters, although Martinez has white skin, he's a latino. Latino people are not caucasians.

They are technically "Latin" countries. Of course, that has to do with the foundation of their languages more than anything else. Spaniards are not exactly dark skinned either and would be considered "white" by many people.

Latino essentially means of Latin Descent. People get too caught up on skin color. This is something that goes all the way back to Rome.

For example: I am Nicaraguense, my family came from Spain (Have our own Coat of Arms), and my family can also be traced all the way back to Rome 2,000 years ago. (Scandal exiled the family to Spain)

 

What about us (Irish) ?

Are we white ?

I'm half Irish (actually half Irish, not half 72nd generation descendant of a man who ate a potato once) and I've always considered myself white. I'm not so sure now though. I'm gonna tick mixed race on the census.

Americans ideas on race seems quite crazy. You ask any native Italian or Spaniard what race they are and they'll say white. Yet Americans seem to have made all sorts of categories for people who live in latin america (where the term latino refers to!) that it all seems to have got confused.

It's a pointless argument anyway. What kind of person supports a fighter just because they're from the same race? A ******.
