or is it just natural? cause i've been at my boxing club for 9 months now and even though my technique/stamina/speed has improved a lot, my punches are still weak. i use the heavy bag a lot but i'm starting to think i just don't have "it". maybe its all about genetics. also at the club there's a picture of mike tyson and underneath it says "punchers are not made.. they are born!" so since i'm not of those who's born.... is there anything else i can do to develop punching power to a decent enough level? can it be taught? or is it just boxing is not for me and it's time to try another sport?
try chopping wood or put a sledgehammer to a big old tyre , but normally punching power is something that comes naturally or you just dont have it
I also tend to think it's mostly genetic. You see these skinny guys who can punch like mules, and it makes you wonder. Arguello and Duran were guys that I marveled at - they didn't look like much, but had amazing power.
Yes...and no. You've probably heard this one about 40 or so times already, but everyone's body works differently. They all have different mechanisms which allow them to do something good, while gaining a disadvantage at something else. Running and/or dancing are done with fluidity by some people. but stiff and awkward to other people as well. A lot of other things come into account when having "punching power" as well. Mindset, commitment to the punch, timing, accuracy, speed, etc. If you really can't seem to develop a good wallop, focus religiously on timing and accuracy.
for sure its genetics , for example ive been on the pads at the boxing gym before and a new kid walks through the door with no prior experience and you can automatically feel the heavy hands and power just from a 1 2
Perfect your technique, getting as much of your body weight behind the punch as you can. And by doing some strength work, chopping wood, hitting tire with sledge hammer etc. That will improve your punching power, but there will still be guys the same size as you, or even small who can walk in the gym on their first day and throw a total arm punch with no proper technique and still hit harder than you. You can improve it to a degree, but it's mostly just natural.
The hardest puncher (pound for pound) at my gym is a mom of two in her late 20's who weighs like 130lbs. She doesn't look like she has an ounce of muscle on her, but she has tons of power. Some people just have it.
It's the same with athletics. Some guys are born to be sprinters, some are born for distance. BUT, anyone can improve their punching power by working technique and strength/power training.
Technique is of most importance, getting everything you can behind the punch and cutting out unneccessary movement. Strength/power training helps further. Some guys are just born to be punchers though.
I can say that punching hard has made my punches a bit stronger. I can move the bags that used to move me.
Thanks for the replies. I'm not asking if i'll ever have devastating ko punching power like Tyson, cause its not possible. But if i did weights, exercises that focus on it and work hard could I ever reach a decent, moderate punching level that could so still some damage? my coach said once before that hitting the heavy bag as hard as you can for 60 seconds three times with rest in between can help a lot. should i try this?
