All a matter of opinion I guess: Melbourne - We are world's sports capital from Sunday Herald Sun - November 12th 2006 MELBOURNE has been named the world's top sports events city, ahead of joint second Paris and Sydney, in the first analysis of its kind. The result is predicted to provide a boost to tourism, bids for events -- including the soccer World Cup -- and international opportunities for Melbourne's events planners and organisers. The study found Melbourne had an "unparalleled track record reputation" for hosting sport, with international events industry bosses also praising its "versatility, stadia, city atmosphere and local passion for all sports". In welcoming the result, Premier Steve Bracks said: "The world is acknowledging what we already know -- that Melbourne is the sport capital of the world. "This year's Commonwealth Games was just the latest in a long list of world-class sporting events staged in Melbourne -- a list that stretches back to the 1956 Olympics and beyond." The study to find the best location to hold a sports event was completed by London-based consulting and research firm ArkSports, whose clients include the NFL, BT, Visa and Ladbrokes. Berlin, in Germany, was fourth, with London fifth. Twenty of the world's top sports cities were selected for the study, based on their history of hosting events. Factors that were analysed and scored included each city's events list from 2002 to 2010, the public interest in terms of attendances and media coverage, their legacies, the city's quality of life, facilities, transport and accommodation, government support, weather and tourism. In addition to analysing data, ArkSports took on the opinions of 50 events industry executives, including major sponsors. As well as being overall winner, with 341.5 points -- 29 points ahead of its nearest rivals -- Melbourne was top for the level of public interest in events, its facilities, its number of major events won and the level of government support. It finished second in the majority of other categories, including quality of life (behind Vancouver), accommodation (behind New York) and weather/tourism and legacy (behind Sydney). The only area in which it polled badly was transport.
Melbourne does many good sporting events. Its downside is this Aussie Rules bollox which is clearly a very sh1t sport
The 7 million people who attended AFL footy matches last year don't share your view about Aussie Rules football Dan. But you are correct regarding Melbourne having plenty of great sport to keep us busy. Just to mention a few, and in no particular order: 1/ The Boxing Day Test -Cricket: Boxing day alone draws about 80,000 and the match day total is often 200,000 plus. 2/ AFL Football: The grand final alone draws just under 100,000; and the season figures are usually 7 million plus. 3/ Motor Racing - F1 & Bikes: The Australian Grand Prix alone attracts 300,000 petrol-heads and a world-wide TV audience. Plus we host the Australian Motor Cycle Grand Prix. 4/ Australian Open - Tennis: One of only 4 Grand Slam tournaments and usually draws 600,000 people over the 14 days of play. 5/ Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival: The $6M Melbourne Cup attracts a crowd of 120,000 plus on it's own, and that's only one day of the carnival. 6/ Soccer - 'A' League: Melbourne Victory are the biggest crowd drawing and most successful team in the national competition. They have drawn crowds of in excess of 50,000 to single matches. Add to that: Boxing, Melbourne Storm (NRL rugby), Melbourne Rebels (Rugby Union), Melbourne Aces (Aust Baseball Fed), the President's Cup (Golf), and just out of town we've got the The Stawell Gift and The Rip Curl Pro Surfing at Bells Beach. (I've probably missed some obvious ones too - but that's because Melbourne is full-on when it comes to sport)
the inkerman used to put all the figths that main event had. some time in the last 6months they stopped - they put the ufc on if there is a head to head. how sad is that. the inkerman will show katsidis fights i think/hope but apart from that you'll only see pac and mayweather fights there now. i thought for sure the cotto fight would be on - given zappa being on the broadcast but no. it's a shame because some of my fav boxing memories were at that pub - but some time after martinez v pavlik and dawson v pascal they stopped. i dont know this pub in hawthorn someone mentioned - the harp? but my feeling is that if the ink can't make money showing the fights, given it has a fight fan clientle, then no one can. i'm biting the bullet and getting foxtel - but then i'll deal with the fact that the main event programmers dont seem to have a clue either. no martinez for oz fans even though he's the most exciting fighter in the world right now
Melbourne is good for sport. I was at the Boxing Day test (Day One was possibly the greatest sporting day of my life).. I was at a night match for the Aus Open.. I'm attending the Grand Prix.. A mate is trying to get me to go and see Collingwood vs Essendon on Anzac day at the MCG.. but i watched the NAB cup final the other night and it bored the **** out of me. Been to every Melbourne Rebels home game so far... quite fun being the original fans of a major sporting team.
If you get the oppurtunity to go to the Anzac day game, seize it, will be close to 90000 crowd and have been some famous clashes in the past.
