I enjoyed the chance to see a talent such as Rigondeaux perform for what will likely be the only time on these shores. And, while it was unfortunate to see Casey lose in such fashion, it's good that he now knows that to make it at world level he needs much, much more experience and refinement. Good for you, making money off the back of a countryman's dreams being crushed.:-( I dont care slap, you're in the minority if you think I am. You're too easy to wind up anyways.
Tonight was a mismatch of epic proportions. The greatest amateur ever against a guy that fights like a novice. Hell he probably is a novice, I don't know about his background but as a pro he's not done a lot. That said, people shouldn't be blinkered into thinking Rig should face Donaire now as they were talking about on RTE. That's a hugely bad matchup for him. Donaire can pose the same sort of problems as Cordoba on a far more dangerous scale. I'd still let him get in a tough fight or two at world level. Casey was not that, he's only fought Cordoba really. I'd like to see him getting more rounds, its not about honing his skills its about getting those pro rounds in.
I'd be in agreement with that TFFP. However, I do think the fights he needs have to be somewhat close to the top-level. Donaire, for now, is obviously a no-go. Mathebula, Ndlovu, even someone like Cermeno or Terrazas would be ideal fights for him, certainly a step up from tonight. At his age he's not getting any younger, and needs to get a decent level of fight to aptly prepare him for the best.
Yeah of course. He's the finished product skills wise, he's as good as he's ever going to be. At his age he's only going to get worse in that department, especially physically, which is a bit sad, but that was always going to be the case when he turned pro this late. Obviously he can't be ****ing around fighting people like Casey at his age. But Donaire...nah. He hasn't got the rounds in the bank yet. Donaire is going to seriously test him on every level, and despite his vast background nothing compensates for good 12 round fights. I'd just say one or two names like you mention and he'd be on track for a mega fight.
A. Not a penny of it coming out of Willie's pocket but the bookies should be punished for idiocy and Boylesports wont bulk under the weight of that loss. B. I may be in a minority but if you carry on the way you are going that minority will rapidly grow. :good
Yeah your right i think they can get him out sharpish and keep him active. Needs to step back up and get him back in with world class opponents. No disrespect to Willy.
Never realised this fight was in Ireland and it had already taken place. Nice surprise in my betting account!
I dont think it's doing Casey a disservice to state he was well out of his depth, because he clearly was, there's no disputing it. This fight, if anything, needs to be a glorified tune-up for a genuine world-level fight. Even a fringe contender like the ones I mentioned would do, hell, a Shimoda fight could be potentially very good for him. Whatever he decides to do, it needs to be done relatively quickly.
Gary Hyde said he'd like to bring Rigondeaux back maybe next year and that can only mean one thing.... Jackal v Jackal. He's a hell of a fighter Willie was simply gutted in there.
Though it has to be said I do have an ulterior motive when I say he shouldn't fight Donaire. I think he loses and he's in my stars of the future team. There ain't that much of a case, when he's 30 years old and the best amateur ever and already at the world stage. Still, I think ideally a fight or two against durable world level opponents. Unfortunately looking at boxrec the pickings are pretty meager. Ndlovu is down to face Molitor.
That would be ideal, he needs to be aptly prepared for Donaire's assault on the division, the likes of Casey wont do that. I'd hate to see it, but I think if he gets one or two decent wins he could beat WV2 by the end of the year. That'd set him up for a Donaire showdown more than anything.
Poonsewat? Stylistics favour Rigo massively, but Poonsewat is a banger and appears fairly durable. He will keep coming for as long as it lasts and is in the top ten. Failing that, a fairly risk free fight @ 126 against say, Daud Yordan? I'd love to see Rigo take on Nonito after notching up a few (just a few) more miles in the pro ranks. Whoever loses, it's the fans that win. And Nonito would be favoured, but is someone as skilled as Rigo completely incapable of beating someone as phenomenal as Donaire? Great fight. If not, maybe Arum will do what he usually does and match up two of his boys: Vasquez Jr Vs Rigo/ JuanMa Vs Gamboa double-header? Or will he protect the two Puerto Ricans?
