He beat Sharkey, Gibbons, Carpentier, Willard, Levinsky, all big names back then and top fighters. Dempsey had more 1st round KOs than any other heavywight champ in history. He not overrated. Plus, he was a very small heavyweight.

Dempsey himself admitted he was overrated.

He was certainly a terrific fighter though. It's hard to rate him head to head because the era he fought in was transitional.

To this day in 2011 there has not been as brutal of a beating in a Heavyweight Championship fight than what Dempsey did to poor Jess Willard.

He is overrated, not for the reasons you stated, but because he ducked all the best black guys. Tunney and Dempsey do not belong on any top 10 lists. Period.
