"Dwyer is a ****ing idiot." Far from it. Dwyer may not always be right(who is?) but he gives a good analysis of a fight, something many ESB idiots cannot. Also, he has a JD from Stanford, one of the best colleges in the US. Does that sound like an idiot to you? ****ing ESB bloggers never cease to amaze me with their stupidity. I disagree with Dwyer and this fight as Vitali has been very active since coming out of retirement and has shown no real signs of slippage to this point. Other than the short Lewis fight, he has not taken much punishment in his career. Solis is carrying way too much weight and shows that he can gas against fighters that have yet to inflict much damage on him. I have Vitali -700 tonight and really cannot see Solis beating him unless Vitali gets cut or hurt early. The longer the fight goes, the less chances for Solis.
This fight screams Vitali-Arreola 2 to me, only replace the overweight Mexican-American with an overweight Cuban.
I utterly despise Johnson but he has very active upperbody movement, bends at the waits alot, and has a very good shoulder roll. His defense is way better than Solis, among the best D at HW. Solis stands there with a high guard and eats shots.
I like to listen to him cause he's very well spoken and comes across as credible. But he's clearly biased against both K brothers. Anyone with a knowledge of the assets and drawbacks of Odlanier Solis and Vitali knows that Solis, more than likely, won't make it to the ninth round, much less, stand a good chance of winning against the beast that is VK.
If you follow Dwyer, you know that he is like all good handicappers in that he is trying to find and exploit bad lines regarding underdogs(the favorite and the underdog both have the same chance of getting a headbut cut in the fight). I disagree with him in that i believe Vitali will be able to land the jab, frustrate Solis and eventually stop him as there are questions regarding his stamina. In my opinion, AA(+425) is a much better underdog against Ward.
fight is not a tossup. that's garbage especially when you're dead even on the scorecards with ray austin after 10. If Solis wins, it's a monumental upset.
This is the issue, or it could be, if Dwyer is biased this way (dont know, never listened to his stuff). You don't have to be an "idiot" to make bad predictions. And you could be the smartest person in the world and make bad predictions. If you let your bias or rooting interest interfere with your picks or your writing, that's as good as being stupid. Anybody who seriously thought Vitali-Solis was a toss-up either doesn't know boxing or is biased against Vitali Klitschko. There is simply no credible way to pick a pudgy 6'1" guy against Vitali. I don't care how old he is. There's a person who writes on ESB and for Fight Hype. Not a dumb guy, not a bad writer. But, IMO, it's impossible to take anything he says about Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather seriously, because he's so pro-Mayweather and anti-Pacquiao. It seems to cloud his judgment, and writing. Dwyer may have the same kind of "blind spot" towards the Klitschkos. As I said, I don't know because I've never listened to his stuff. What often happens for these writers, and predictors, is that they work very hard to try to convince themselves and their audience that what they hope will happen will, or can, actually happen. Even when it makes almost no sense or is highly implausible. And some get pulled in by that con. Then, after something like Vitali beating down Solis happens, they're left feeling like 'What happened?', because they believed the "analysis" of the biased writer or predictor.
I was thinking the same thing. Couldn't take a boxing analyst serious who claimed a fat, unproven pro HW like Solis could be rated a toss-up vs. Vitali. Dwyer seems like a guy who intentionally (or maybe even subconsciously) favors the upset just so that later he can say "Told you so, fools". He'll be wrong 19 out of 20 times and then every once in a while he'll feel like an all-knowing guru.
Great post. :good Many prognosticators are exactly how you spell-out here: They make the long-shot pick, again and again, just so they can have that one "I told you so!" gem that will make them famous. Solis never had a shot in hell against Vitali. I remember, back in the day, Ron Borges of the Boston Herald picked Holyfield over Tyson. He was one of only a few who did. I can't even begin to tell you how long he lived off of that pick. Dwyer was probably trying to do the same thing, or may have been.
