8 weight divisions vs less 'world' titles: Which would benefit boxing more?

gaz ive had shits that weighed more than th lb's differance between some of the weight classes

 

Unfortunately both go hand in hand and are there for the same reason.

New weights are pretty much the same as new belts and are mainly only there for promotional reasons such as boxer A has never lost at whatever weight and things. Plus as mentioned, we could well have at least 68 current world champions at any given stage. It's a joke and unfortunately there aren't any true world champions in any of the divisions at the moment.

Ideally, I'd like 8 divisions with one title in each. It ain't ever gonna happen though.

 

Obviously in an ideal world we'd cut some of the bull**** divisions out. We all came up with a decent and fair suggestion of that a little while ago.

But all things considered the title situation is more damaging.

The question isn't "are all the weight divisions needed" though. Boxing has declined because casual fans can't follow the multiple titles, not because theres another weight inbetween welterweight and middleweight.

 

I think having promotors in boxing causes a lot of these problems.
If you try and restrict it too much you could have breakaway organisations with certain fighters affiliated to them by contract therefore causing the sane problem. I think we have to accept things as they are.
As things are I prefer more weight classes, because I believe some fighters we respect would get lost on weight divisions that span larger weight differences.

 

I agree its the multiple titles that people can't deal with and with multiple titles comes the opportunities for the top fighters in the division to avoid each other. So not only does it have a confusing effect it stops the matches being made.


After a while fans dont care IBO WBA WBC IBF WBF all sound the same and they are all just letters to a fan. What we want is THE heavyweight champion etc etc

I don't think the weight divisions are that bad above lightweight.

One champ per division would be class.

 

I don't think having promoters is necessarily the problem i think the way that promoters operate now is highly different from the way they used to 30-50 years ago. It used to be that all fighters were free agents and had a manager that got them the bouts. It was the promoters job to put on the best fights they could. They didnt have that vested interest of "building" in the same way that they do now that was the managers job to steer his man.

Obviously at the higher level Louis with Jacobs etc things were contracted but it used to be that all fighters were free agents that was the norm not the exception.

 

If there were only 8 weight divisions then a lot of title holders would be those who could remain the strongest and biggest at the weight, rather than the best boxer. It could see quite large weight discrepancies and more injuries/deaths.

Oe champ per division would force the best to fight the best as there woul be only one title.
