I think Vitali may have been forced into retirement.

I've just rewatched the fight. Vitali had Solis completely figured by something like a minute and a half into the round. He was all set to fire a counter-punch once Solis is within a shooting distance, which is exactly what happened. Excellent timing, aiming and execution by Vitali.

You should have stats handy to make this king of claims. If you don't it's nothing but a general impression.

He was definitely winning the first round. Vitali didn’t land any of his jabs and connected only with couple of body shots.
Just before the KO I turned to my friend and said, "this is clearly the hardest opponent Vitali has fight during his comeback". Then I heard class shattering looked back to TV and fat man was down.

Such a disappointment it was turning up to be quite entertaining battle, but guy couldn’t take even one punch.

    He showed some skill tought

The fight was deeply annoying. I would have preferred it if Solis had turned up, been a punching-bag for 12 rounds & lost a shut-out UD.

Instead he boxed beautifully then lost via bizarre injury. This leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

    Worst. Possible. Result.

It doesn't matter dude. Solis was lead to believe that he could handle Vitali's jab which prompted him to step up his offense. Then watch the last minute of the fight where Vitali got a feel for Solis' rythm and started implementing his lean-back technique. As Solis lunged deeper into Vitali's defence perimeter, he got blasted with a protective counter-punch which ended the fight. Pro boxing is a lot like a chess game or poker. Mental and intellectual side of a fighter is just as important as a physical one. And Vitali is a master in that department whereas Solis is a mere amateur in comparison.

Does half of ESB just not know what ring generalship is?

When neither guy lands many clean effective punches, you defer to secondary scoring criteria (ie ring generalship & defense).
