Finally watched it and had some fairly similar thoughts.

My scorecard is a bit all over the place, much like the fight itself really.

I had Rojas taking it by a point: 115-114. Bassa taking rounds 2,5,6,7 and 8. Rojas taking rounds 1,3,9,10,11 and 12. Round 4 I scored even.

I wasn't sure what to do in the first round after Rojas floored Bassa and proceeded to give him a Roger Mayweather-esque (on Whitaker) punch as Bassa was on the deck. I decided to call it a 10-9 round because Rojas was lucky not to be deducted a point after that blatant foul.

In the 4th, I didn't actually think Rojas decked Bassa with a punch; it looked more of a push to me, and since Bassa seemed to be getting the better of the round up until that point, I decided to call it even.

Again in the 10th, I didn't think Bassa went down from a punch, so no two point round for Rojas.

I agree with you that Bassa basically got the better of the fight in so far as it was kept clean. Up through the midway point I thought he was handling Rojas pretty handily, but then he seemed to hit a wall.

His legs just started giving way on him, and it's a pretty big indictment on Rojas' incompetence that he was not able to land any really hurtful punches on Bassa down the stretch because Bassa was basically ready to go.

Personally I wouldn't read too much into this fight as far as Bassa goes though. He looked a shadow of himself from the get go, even though he was schooling Rojas with his quicker hands up until he started to tire out. His balance looked ordinary from the start and his timing was less than precise. And of course his stamina was a fraction of what it was in fights like the Zapata affairs. Totally different animal to the one we saw there.

You're probably right that Bassa was never the strongest of flyweights, but I think he wasn't prepared for the illegal moves that Rojas was allowed to pull without consequence. Rojas shouldn't have been allowed to do half the things he was doing in there if the ref was half-way decent.

Sure thing G, fire away. If I can remember the proceedings of the fight I'll try and engage. Thing is, there are so many fights that I've scored there that I don't have the scantest recollection of now, so it might be hard to comment on your cards. I'll make an effort to re-watch some rounds we disagree on and see if I see things differently the second time round.

Having scored some fights more than once, I do find myself having differing thoughts on a round or two per fight, so I'm sure there'll be rounds where I come to see things your way on a second viewing.

Shane Mosley-Philip Holiday.

Shane's first crack at a title and whilst at times he struggled, it was a pretty clear victory in the end.

Supposedly he had the flu for this bout and along with his inexperience you could excuse him for having some tough moments...Holiday himself was a pretty decent fighter, cagey and relentless..though Shane shut him down pretty well.

Scored it 116-113...could have been wider for Shane really, thats as close as it was going to get for Phil.

Had 1,2,3,6,10,11 and 12 for Shane.
And 4,5,7 and 8 for Holiday
The 9th I had even.

Scoring the 4th for Holiday was contentious...I kept thinking for a few rounds that I had given it to the wrong man but it was a clear shift in momentum after Mosley swept the first 3 rounds handily..He seemed to outwork Shane and smother his best work, though he was overall fairly ineffective with his own. This round could have went to Shane as he had two good flurries at the start of the round and landed some good bodyshots but I went with Phil because I thought he shook these off well and grinded out the rest of the round.

The 9th I scored even..so obviously some people are going to see that for Shane. He was comprehensively outworked for the first 2mins, Holiday even landing a couple of blows with something on them instead of his usually pretty weak stuff..but Shane finished the round stronger with some heavier blows.

Shane started and finished strong but damn did he look tired and frustrated in the midrounds...Holiday to his credit was a hard nut to crack, took some hellacious body shots with little reaction and was quite slippery and awkward...making Shane miss big on a fair few occasions.

Mosley was to quick early on..He had a great 3rd, where he used his jab very effectively..which is not a tool Shane is known for, thats something that stood out for me..Unfortunately he wouldnt use it consistently for the rest of the fight though Holiday did do a good job of getting in close making the jab redundant. The body work that Shane was using was vintage Mosley however..excellent two handed attack, with some of those uppercuts surely rearranging organs into alphabetical order.

Then Holiday started to kick it up a gear, walking Shane down and suffocating him..Shane turned very defensive for a few rounds, his workrate was dismal and he tried to steal rounds with a handful of winged hooks that didnt really do any damage..He showed some off the hook head movement at times but couldnt back it up with any meaningful offense..The crowd booed him several times. It looked like Holiday was starting to turn the fight into one that suited him.

The way Shane finished was impressive however...Took over in the last 3 rounds and had arguably won the 9th.. He began cutting Holiday's workrate in half as he couldnt deal with the sheer speed and explosive power of Mosley.

Cant help at marvel at the physical specimen at lightweight Shane Mosley was...but at the same time an unflinching and crafty Phillip Holiday really did make him look pretty bad at times.

 

Just watched Chiquita Gonzalez - Michael Carbajal 1. Great fight, I had Gonzalez up 59-53 mainly due to the knockdowns. Carbajal came back great from the second knockdown and really won the rest of the round but I scored it as i would imagine the judges were.
No arguments with anyone who had it closer. I gave Carbajal the 4th.
