Andy Lee Vs James Degale at Super Middleweight

Now that's a good fight but has zero chance of happening IMO..

 

While your there Tony. Regarding Groves v DeGale who do you think wins the fight?

 

thats a pretty fair assesment. lee looked incredibly stiff to me and as you said that leads to him being hit or being hit when he tries to pull back his head.

there are a few things that lee could alter that would make him a very dangerous fight for most at 160. he needs to become a more 'boring' fighter - use his jab way more and obviously hold his hands higher, use a lot more 1-2s and tie up his oppponent ala Wlad. he could also benefit from going up to 168, he looked really skinny to me in his last fight and that was at 163. strengthen up his legs and see what happens. he also has fight ending power in his right hook and left hand, maybe something DeGale lacks?

 

I think he's a bit too 'boring'. I don't mean that in terms of the fight being boring because it obviously wasn't, it was fantastic, but his attitude. He doesn't use what he has consistently enough. I don't know if its stamina issues, confidence issues, or perhaps the two are intertwined. That's possible IMO, he blew his load against Vera and now he has doubts in the back of his mind. The reason he was in a 'war' is because he's easy to hit, but also because he allowed McEwan to shut down his range and sit on his chest. If Lee was consistent with his jab, consistent with his right hook, consistent with his left hand, he wouldn't be getting walked down. He had all the advantages from range but he wasn't consistent enough to earn his space.

 

And yeah the jab is key and needs to be 5x better than it was. It's not as if he can't throw these punches properly, quickly and with power. He really can. But he does it sporadically and if you do that you give a guy confidence. Wlad Klitschko, Tommy Hearns, Lennox Lewis etc didn't dominate from range by fighting 30 seconds a round. It doesn't matter if you're the best fighter in the world for those 30 seconds, your opponent is going to catch onto the fact you're not consistent.

 

Although it's admirable that Groves has "stood up and been counted for", he's been forced into that predicament because he isn't good enough, it would seem, to totally dominate C level opposition. The fact DeGale has managed to do this, and against arguably better opposition, speaks volumes. One fighter is a potential world level operator whereas the other is destined to peak at Euro-level. That's the way I see things at this point in time, but Boxing is a strange old sport. Stranger things have happened.

 

All I am saying is dont write off Groves. He has a good team behind him and they will make sure he is ready for the fight and will get the best out of him. DeGale if he beleives the hype then it will be his downfall.

 

Ive been thinking for a while that Groves main problem is he tries to fight too much like david haye

It's not the same without DeGale's swinging arm movement.

 

its kind of true though, he dosent have hayes attributes, Groves has his hands down at his knees most of the time. A good high guard might suit him better.

When has Lee ever looked like quitting on his stool?

When has Degale ever properly knocked a dude out?
