Just watch the last round again, you will c during the round how the uppers were landing and how often VK initiated the clinches, the ref has to pull him hard in order to brake the hug, he was done and he was lucky that the doctor stop the fight, if not he would had quit or his corner would had throw in the towel.

So lets get this straight, Vitali was on ***** street at the end of the 6th holding on for dear life, Lewis had won 5 & 6 and that computes to you as him getting ko'd in the 7th... what a total ******

Past prime out of shape Lewis ****ed up his face and it got stopped so we will never know but the way 6 ended the more likely to be KO'd in 7 was Vitali.

Me too. The what if it continued thread, is likely to have resulted in Vitali receiving a career ending injury.

As for the rematch..that's a tougher call.

Part of me thinks that if Lewis honestly thought he could win a rematch he would have tried to, and another thought is that Lewis just did a whole calculation of the pro's and con's and simply decided, the con's outweighted the pro's.


We know the the same Vitali would have shown up in the rematch, but we don't know which version of Lewis would have shown up.

History shows that Lewis does well in rematches, but he was far slower than he usually is, and his timing especially at the beginning of the fight was way off. And if anyone followed his career they could see, he wasn't the same fighter he was in his prime.

So what would you have?

You'd either have Lewis winning again, probably more convincingly, or you'd have Vitali beating a 38-39 year old version of lewis, which might make for interesting fights, but historically isn't really that meaningful, other than the fact Lewis would have ended his career on a loss, instead of a win.

Vitali's worst round in that fight was rd 3, he still came back (with 1 eye) and battered Lewis for the other two rounds.

He took a break in round 6 and was on his way to knocking Lewis out in the 7th. If Vitali was getting beat up in rd 6, why did he want to continue and Lewis was just happy that it was over?

 

This is a good analysis.

Props to Vitali for putting up a great fight before the cut, but it was obvious to anyone not in complete denial that Lewis was fading fast as a fighter. His timing was bordering on atrocious at times, and he was quite a bit slower and sloppier than he had been the past few years before.

He retired at the right time in my opinion, I would've favoured Vitali to beat up a faded Lewis is the rematch.

 

Vitali lost, get over it. If they carried on fighting, Vitali would be walking around with a patch on his eye today.
