He did. So did Calzaghe, but both have looked a lot less belaboured in other performances. Bika just sucks to fight.

Bute did not at all, but just b/c Bute beat him so easily, does not mean he would beat Ward and he would have not beat Calzaghe. The op was just implying that b/c Bute did not knock Magee out in 30 seconds means Ward would beat him, which makes no sense.

    Its tough to say.
Ward only has one good win, over a double vision suffering Kessler.
I have since read that Green was also unwell, not that I would consider Green a big win, and Green was KOd by a fighter in his 40s with a terrible SMW resume of 6-6-0 in his next fight and Green was that fighters biggest SMW win :yikes.
Ward didnt look as good as Bute in beating Bika and didnt look as good against Miranda as Bute did, so against common opponents Bute has looked better than Ward, not that, that means Ward might not beat Bute.
Magee even if you dont consider him better, is a more accomplished SMW with a better SMW win resume than Dirrell, Green, Johnson or Abraham who as I mentioned a long time back as overated.
If you look at Wards SMW resume it is behind Butes at this time and not looking to change if Ward beats Abraham as expected

    :good

The Irishman deserves some credit for his work... He came in well prepared, in great shape, and obviously very focused and determined to pull the upset... (His southpaw stance seemed to be messing up Bute's defence as well)

Sure, Bute looked average at times... but he eventually locked in and closed the show in style... Now it's on to Kessler.

What more do you want for fk all?

Bute didn't have his best performance but Magee is tough and came to fight. I don't think this fight changes much about Bute, sometimes you just don't dominate fighters you possibly should and Bute did close the show well. My problem with Bute is that his level of competition is starting to level off with guys considered fringe contenders. Magee, Brinkley, and a declining Miranda aren't exactly a great run. Solid enough fighters but a guy at the top of his division needs to be mixing better fights in there somewhere. Kessler, Pavlik, Dirrell, and possibly a Super Six loser are all going to be available for Bute's next fight. He needs to face one of those guys and not someone like Mendy or Green.

Maybe that's the case. But Froch fought Magee five years ago. Froch wasn't half the fighter he is today, and now Magee is 35. And this is to take nothing away from Magee, who is skilled, tough as nails and has tons of heart. But he's not a top SMW. And Bute is supposed to be the best SMW out there. After that performance, I have serious doubts. Magee is tough, awkward, skilled, yes, but Ward is much more so. Bute got hit way too much and missed too many of his own punches.

Well, Ward struggled with Bika. Abraham got dominated by Froch. Froch got beat by an injured Kessler. Were they mediocre? I don't think so.

Magee proved that he is far better than when he fought Froch. Being 35 doesn't make you shot. Magee is not. He maybe better than Abraham at SMW. I think he is at least more difficult to beat.

Bute won 8 rounds out of 10 and knocked down Magee 4 times. Magee himself said Bute was the hardest puncher he's faced. He added that he was very hard to hit.

You say Bute was mediocre. I wonder what he'll do when he fights well. ;)

It's possible to be a fan of a fighter without being blind to their flaws and limitations. I root for Bute in every fight. But I saw a lot that needs improving for him to beat the top SMWs - which Magee is not. That's it. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Maybe it was just an awkward style match-up. Maybe Bute didn't take the fight seriously enough. Either way, he got hit a lot and missed too often. End of.

It's not end of, it's just your opinion. Bute's style is not all defense. He gets hit by many of his opponents, but not that much. His connection percentage was maybe a bit less than usual but still very good. What I saw is: not enough combinations and after the sixth round, he was going too much for the KO. He was not fluid as usual.

See, I can see some of Bute flaws. I just don't agree with the ones you saw!
And I think Magee fought very well.

Winning every round and knocking down the other guy 4 times is mediocre I guess. You should see Froch vs Magee..now that was a really mediocre. HAHA! Or Ward vs Bika. Ward's face was battered all over the place! LOL!
These ******s cannot seem to understand that Magge is actually a good figther! 3 rounds...GTFO!
