That door swings both ways. If Martinez sucked, many Hispanics on the board would be more than happy to let white folks claim him as white.

Latino isn't a race, you fool. David Ortiz of Red Sox is latino, but he's obviously black.

Martinez's people hail from Spain. He's of European ancestry. Get it?

Remember, the language the indigenuous peoples spoke before the Spaniards came to the New World wasn't Spanish.

People of European ancestry in Latin America consider themselves white. They will commonly identify as "blanco", usually have a historically developed privilege, and can often distinguish themselves from other racial groups.

The thing is however, a "blanco" Latin American does not share the same identity with North American and European "white" cultural groups. The context of Latin American identity is one separated from the white-dominated first world. Many considered white hispanics come to the united states assuming they will be categorized with the majority and separated from mestizos, only to receive very similar discrimination.

Colonial history has shaped the way we view race, and while Spanish descendents in Latin America are white in their context, they are not white in the same sense that the English-speaking world defines the word culturally.

He is a white hispanic. Neither hispanic nor latino are a race, but the region you were born in. Hispanic comes from the word Hispania and refers to any spanish speaking country or was part of the Spanish empire, even some parts of Africa. Latino can also be from a Spanish background but doesnt necessarily have to be from there it also includes parts of Germany, Italy, France, and Portugal. Its in America where they decided to get the 2 to mean the same which they arent.

Bunch of ignorant Americans and desperate Mexicans here that think hispanic is a race. Argentina is like 90% white for ****s sake they have a higher white percentage than United States. Argentina is a land of European immigrants just like the U.S and Canada.

    Actually he is.
Hes Argentinian, meaning that all his heritage is traceable back to europe. Argentina isnt liek Brazil which has a large Afro and Native population.

Something like 98% of Argentinians, trace their ancestry 100% back to Europe.
Something like 13% of Argentines are of Irish decent!

This whole "He isnt white, hes latino" is dumb. Are we to believe if 2 Germans go to live in Buenos Aires, and have a kid,the kid isnt white??????

Am I really suppsoed to belive that Saul Alvarez isnt white because he speaks Spanish??

All those white people in South Africa arent white either I suppose??

This thread is hilarious. I'll tell you what though, it really sheds light on how race is much more subjective than many people realise.

Race actually shouldnt be subjective at all.

Its just that people mix up race with ethnicity.

At the end of the day, biologically speaking theres no such thing as "race", theres only one human race. Thats not me being all mushy and liberal, thats actually a fact.

As more people of different colors and nationalities inter-marry,even that will become more and more meaningless.

If biologically speaking, there's no such thing as race, then how could you argue that race shouldn't be subjective? I agree that people mix up race and ethnicity, but even beyond that there is a measure of subjectivity when race is involved.

I was reading about the history of race in The United States. Originally, only The English and Germans were considered white. Eventually the Irish and Italians were considered white(although some Italians don't consider themselves white). Jews weren't considered white until the 40's. Native Americans were classified as white in the census but rejected the label. For the purpose of the census, people in the Middle East are also classified as white.

Now when it comes to Latinos, it's a whole different ball game. As you pointed out, the line between race and ethnicity gets blurred, and rightfully so. I've been called a racist on this forum for saying that there are white latinos even though though many latinos classify themselves as white on the census.

There's even a debate now about whether Africans from central Africa should be classified as a different race than their West and East African counterparts. In the end, I believe there is a relatively big measure of subjectivity when it comes to race.
