Jirov's size isn't the issue as much as he, like Slappy, places little emphasis on defensive skills and both use aggressive punching (Vassily), and slapping (Calzaghe) as a defensive tool.
That being the case a matchup of these two would be offense against offense. Where one offense is a swarm of slaps, while the other is a whirlwind of solid punches.
At the same weight I see Jirov walking through whatever slap Joe throws and landing crisply with his own correctly thrown, closed hand punches.
Call me old school, but in this case I believe the better man will be the one with the better offense and the better technique. Jirov. :good

Calzaghe beat one of the best boxers of all time in Bernard Hopkins, Hop was clearly past his best though, Jirov would be picked apart.

Funny how technician Hopkins was schooled, manuvered round the ring and beaten :smoke, so I guess you rate Jirov above Hopkins or is it just styles you are looking at ?

I just saw Calzaghe v Jirov tbh, i wasn't being that attentive. But even at LHW, providing that the weight cut doesn't diminish Jirov too much i see him stopping Calzaghe. It's just a bad style matchup for Joe against a stronger fighter.

President like many others has a hard time accepting that Calzaghe beat Hopkins and Jones, and now has another problem in Toneys SMW resume and LHW resume being brutally exposed, so has to say that Calzaghe would lose various fantasy match ups because as we all know he never actually lost any pro fights.
Fantasy match ups are speculation, results are real and Calzaghe never got beat. Live with it :smoke

Joe beat Hopkins on workrate, if you could call it a win, it's a pretty divisive issue.

Old Hopkins inability to match Joe's stamina is what made that fight close.

Jirov's style is nothing like Hopkins. Jirov is a cruiserweight version of Calzaghe with better punching technique, true he is less of a fighter in certain regards, but not in the ragards that would matter in light of the styles and the size disparity.

I too see Jirov stopping Joe inside the distance, but I don't see Jirov cutting below 182 lbs without draining himself. No way he makes 175, let alone 168.

At a catchweight of 182 or so: Jirov TKO 9.

Often Calzaghe wasnt the stronger fighter, but he never got beat. What were Jirovs 5 best wins? This will tell you his level. Jirov got beat by a former MW with a terrible SMW and LHW resume, in fact Calzaghes 2 fights at LHW are more impressive than Toney at LHW at all. Theres a bit of a form line

    Exactly!

Styles make fights and Hopkins realized this following the judges gift win to Slappy.
Hopkins fought the wrong style. One which would see him win a close decision. However, this was the wrong style to deploy against Joe, and following the fight and the scores were read, Hopkins finally realized it.

Had Joe not ducked the rematch we would have seen Hopkins switch from his usual "saefty-first" defensive posture to a less defensive minded offensive strategy which would have been much more effective against a slapper like Calzaghe. We saw Hopkins use this offensive aggressive style in his following fights with Pavlik and Pascal.

Had there been a rematch between BHOP-Slappy, it would have looked more like Hopkins-Pavlik, and Joe knew this, the lucky crystal-nosed *******. :yep

SMW is at least 40lbs below Jirovs natural walking around weight, so I'm guessing he would struggle:roll:

Hey fool, it's only personal opinion IF Jirov could come down in weight while retaining his strength and stamina.
Although he hasn't, I believe he could have if a bout with someone like Calzaghe had been presented.
Jirov was a well discipled boxer who I believe would have easily met Calzaghe at LHW or some other catch weight.
Either way, Jirov would batter Calzaghe while Calzaghe's slaps would prove ineffective against a style and performer like jirov.
Pick at these threads if you will. Still won't change the fact that Jirov defeats Calzaghe at his own game.
