Recently I have watched Jung Koo Chang pretty much bully and destroy the majority of his competition at Light Flyweight. Was there any fighters who actually ran this guy close during his title reign? I know he lost to Zapata in what was a close decision, but excluding that, was there any other competitors who came even remotely close to upsetting Chang? Any controversial decisions go his way?
Zapata the first time obviously. I aint seen it but apparently German Torres pushed a very bad Chang hard in one of their fights. Hideyuki Ohashi gives a very shot Chang two hard fights. A young Sot Chitalada puts up a good fight in their first bout.
I haven't watched any Chang for some time. I thought the Tokashiki fight was a classic. Good thread Addie I'm looking forward to replies, as I say, it's been a while since I've watched much Chang, I'm too busy right now but I'll brush up asap.
German Torres rematch and Isidro Perez towards the end of his reign were debatable decisions.it's been years since i watched either though. Chang was barely in top shape for the last couple of years of his title run and sometimes before then as well, which is when he declined and turned in poor performances eg. Ohashi rematch. the closest to a real back and forth fight involving a sharp looking Chang was probably Zapata 1.Chitalada had success in the second half of their fight, but largely because he fouled his way back into the fight imo.He was getting handled before butting Chang open. Top fighters could obviously potentially give him a tough fight, but as far as the fighters he DID face, he was generally only really overly bothered by things he brought on himself imo.Which may be tough to stomach if you have little time for fighters who are lazy outside the ring.
If Chang was off form, he was ragged (2nd Torres fight) and nowhere near the force past prime (Chiquita) that he was before. At his peak, no one really, although he had to summon a second wind in some fights (Tokashiki for instance) and didn't just walk through everyone. I had him winning the Zapata fight 9-6 (half a round missing on my video though)
Yeah, nobody has that round I don't think. I've heard Chang gets dropped 3 times but I can't confirm this. Unfortunately.
I've watched Chang since his earliest fights in the "rookie king" tournaments, and nobody really tested the version that entered the ring in-shape and hungry. To be honest, he probably was pushed more in his sparring sessions.
