Thank you for imparting a little logic into the discussion. Do not expect to be rewarded, however.

hhhhhmmm interesting but i dont think so, hes got the spanish connection alrite but i just see him as a latino, but then again hes probably FAR more "white" than many or even most darker skinned people are "black", its a minefield out there

but then again if many argentines see themselves as white then whos to argue with them?

His heritage is Spanish, ie from Spain.

    but then

If you want to call him a Latino because he's from Latin America and speaks Spanish, I have no quarrel with that. But he is not a mestizo or an Argentine-Indian. He is a Spaniard born in Argentina, thus his heritage is European. In short, he's white.

    You got that right.

As if I didn't see this coming from a mile away.

But, as I am tired as is of posting on this topic, consider this me folding: There's no white, black, ect.......

    Happy?

    Hoops
PS- I hope you will also ask the people who are saying he isn't white to define what "non-white" is. I am not, however, holding my breath.

Im not going to argue with the guy at all, spain is obviously in his background and if he sees himself as an argentinian/spanish or other way around, white guy then thats what he is

At the end of the day i think that if the guy was born is spain he would have a bigger following in europe, as it is i think most people in europe even see him as maybe an argentine white latino, but what do most people know, maybe we should just listen to him

According to a lot of people, there's no hope at all..

Most of my black friends or acquaintance's don't watch boxing at all, in fact, they pay more attention to ufc instead as well as my white friends.. They all know of the mainstream boxers like Pacquiao and Mayweather.. Most of my white friends root for Pacquiao because of his style and performances, not because they can't kind a great white boxer.. On the other hand, my black friends root for whoever is black in a fight..

In the USA, I don't think white american's are looking for a "great white hope." Most of the time, latinos will root for lations, african-americans will root for african-americans, and so on, but white americans root for whoever no matter the race.. Not saying each other nationality or race are only fans of their fighters, but the majority is.. If you ask all my white friends who know a little something about boxing, they probably can't even tell you the name of a white american boxer.. They've never even heard of Kelly Pavlik..

The Ethnography of Argentina makes this country, along with other areas of new settlement like [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_Canada"]Canada[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_Australia"]Australia[/ame] or [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_the_United_States"]the United States[/ame], a melting pot of different peoples.[1] Most Argentines are descendents of colonial-era settlers and of the 19th and 20th century immigrants from [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe"]Europe[/ame], with about 90 % of the population being of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_ethnic_groups"]European[/ame] descent[2][3]
The majority of these immigrants arrived from [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy"]Italy[/ame] and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain"]Spain[/ame], as well as from other European countries, from 1870 to 1950. The most common ethnic groups in Argentina today are [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_people"]Italian[/ame] and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaniard"]Spaniard[/ame] (mostly [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galicians"]Galicians[/ame] and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basques"]Basques[/ame]).

    from wikipedia

    White = European descent

It's just a bit funny that all of Europe with different populations are bundled together simply as "white", as if there's some commonality other then skin color (which actually varies) which seems like a poor way to classify people.

what the hell is this debate all about? of course martinez is white, his skin colour is kind of a give away. he's from south america, so he's not white? so david haye's from the uk, so he's not black? and do you mean great white hope like he only gets attention because of his race? or that he's a good white boxer, which is such a shocking development that there must be another reason behind it.. must be because he's latino, and therefore has nothing to do with white people at all!? jesus christ, you'd think by 2011 people would be past this and realise that race has nothing to do with your natural ability whatsoever..
