I'm not confusing it, I'm simply breaking down the two main interpretations that have made this thread a confusing 18 page conflict.

Whiteness is not a definite thing because race is a fluid social construct. During much of the last century you would be called crazy for calling an Irish or later Italian person "white". Now they have assimilated into the cultural identity of whiteness in the United States.

My point is that while he is a White Latino, a Great White Hope type of fighter needs to represent the cultural identity of the North American and Western European racial majority. Martinez is definitely white, but being from Latin America does have everything to do with the debate on whether he is considered the same kind of white or enough of a white guy for GWH potential, in the same way that a "white" Turkish or Egyptian or Caribbean fighter would.

It's simply not a cut and dry definition and race has never been an objectively biological definition. He's white, but there are contexts in which he can be seen as something other.

Yep, you proved he is white, but he is not a GWH. If that was the case, then the Klits would be huge in America. Good argument bro, but if Sergio does become the household name like pacman it wont be cuz he is fair complexion either. GWH propaganda created by American Anglos so it pertains exclusively to them. There could be a mix like Sergio, but he was not raised on American soil or brought up American. Id consider Danny Lopez who looked white and is of Spanish Irish descent, but equally as important brought up American. Id have no problem with Anglos claiming him a GWH, but not Sergio. No way.

Not true i have always considered even the mediocre Argentinans to be Latino. When you talk about the greats from his country like Monzon,Galindez etc etc.. they are always labeled as "Latino greats" You never hear anyone refer to them as "white fighters" why now?

You're a racist moron. Why would you even call someone a "white hope" when the heavyweight champ is white? We'll never get passed this with idiots like you around.

All i know is that if Sergio was in California or any southwestern state People would assume hes a light complected Mex/Amer or Latino... Dont think too many would mistake him for a white guy.

At the same time, they would probably mistake a tanned white guy from spain as a mex/amer or a latino....

Most people think Antonio banderas is from mexico :patsch... I blame it on the desperado movie
