Would have been an easier night for Duran than the first fight was. Duran eats defensive fighters.

At least he stayed in there to hear the final bell, as opposed to quitting to save face. The sad thing is that his plan actually worked, the hardcore barely even recognise the second fight at all much less credit Ray for it. "Duran beat them both at their peak". "True, but Ray handled his business in the rematch". "But...but...but...". No buts, Duran won a fight and so did Ray, a professional fighter at the top of the game shouldn't be doing silly **** in between fights in the first place, and if he is in no shape to be fighting, don't sign anything. :nono

I find it hard to even overrate Duran as a fighter, because he was just so brilliant. A truly rare specimen. His blend of technique, physical ability and tactical intelligence is probably second to none.

But this whole "man's man" silliness that goes around concerning him I find almost as tedious as it is juvenile. A real man doesn't **** away his title like that and make excuses for every loss he suffered while refusing to give his opponents their due. A man does like Hearns (whom Duran ironically referred to as "chicken"): goes out on his shield and then goes into the winner's dressing room (Hagler's in this case) and congratulates him.

    yeah quitting's bad, real bad.

no one makes excuses like duran. don't know if you've heard some of his interviews in spanish as an old man. some of the **** he comes out with is just wild.

For me, just saying "I lost to the better man on the night" is many times as impressive as making a ferocious face.

It depends on who you are as a man, some like Duran and some like Leonard.

I have some freinds that are like Duran and some freinds like Leonard, be it for good or bad, some times both. I will always prefer a guy like Duran, it seems that he can be a **** at times but you will always know where you stand with him. Leonard might be your 'mate' only to **** you over at a later stage and he will see nothing wrong with what he did, you wont know if he is your mate or not.

Duran and Leonard were at a bar, a few words are exchanged, Duran calls Leonard a maricon and threaterns to bash Leonard. Leonard uses his charm to subdue Duran a buys him a drink, Leonard goes back to his table and watches Duran through out the night, Leonard sees that Duran is drunk and says a few sly things to him, Duran blows up and Leonard keeps it going to enrage Duran, Duran says to take it outside, Leonard agrees, Leonard (being sober) wins and proclaims that he is the better fighter of the two.

Leonard! Of course! Duran won CLOSE the first time they fought and that was mainly because Leonard fought the wrong fight by standing and fighting with Duran. Leonard would have won the fight, clearly.

You do realize that Leonard is probably a nice guy right? He doesn't spend his nights on the town beating up drunkards? Just wondering. Duran, in truth, is actually like a little kid. He does shitty things, questionable things, but we blame the parents, or in this case, Ray Leonard, instead of holding him duly responsible. A man takes responsibility for his actions.

AS with everything I go with the known facts. In the 2nd fight there is no doubt that Duran was far from the fighter he was in June 1980. Leonard won the 2nd fight fair and sqaure. he was champ after the fight.
BUT he did not beat Duran at his best. That there is no doubt. Leonard himself admits that. He said that early in the 2nd fight he could tell Duran was nothing like he was 5 months earlier.

I think Duran of the 2nd fight was still a very good fighter. I don't think he trained properly for many fights back then. he was so good he rarely had to train hard. He tried this against Leonard and he paid for it.

Another thing about the 2nd fight that nobody on this board ever talks about is the been there done that feel to the fight. It was a bore, every before the fight people were bored with it. The whole Leonard/Duran thing had been going on for a year, and they already fought. Duran had nothing to prove in the 2nd fight and obviously couldn't get up for it.

Leonard beat Duran, albeit a slightly lesser version. Ray didn't force feed him during the pre-fight build up, and he didn't force him to sign the contract at gunpoint. Duran made his bed.

Leonard might be a nice guy as long you know your place with him, which is under him, as long as you guys are not competing and you stoke his ego, he will befreind you, while it suits him. Get out of line with Duran and you might get slapped, than once the heat has died down all will be fogoten.

Jakob is right, Hearns seems to be the most gentleman out of the four.
